While the male Sabine map turtle may look to some like a “pencil-necked geek,” as the author puts it, markings on the shell, limbs, head, and neck make map turtles among the most attractive turtles on earth. Sawbacks feature a striking ridge down their shell. Few turtles show themselves off to such advantage. Photographs included here of Graptemys basking poses reveal to what improbable heights these turtles can scale, the spread-eagle sunning stances they adopt, the stacking of individuals on a crowded site, and the heads that warily watch the world above the waterline.

When this book first appeared in 2013 I wondered how much information on map turtles it could possibly have that was not already covered in the 72 pages on Graptemys in the colossal volume “Turtles of the United States and Canada, 2nd Edition” (Ernst and Lovich. 2009. John Hopkins University Press, Baltimore. 827 pp.)? The Map Turtle and Sawback Atlas is an excellent book with 460 pages containing a wealth of new information on these exceptionally beautiful turtles. The text is well written and comprehensive. The maps delimit state and county boundaries with relevant rivers illustrated in blue and dots for locality records, unfortunately museum specimens are not identified. One of the few criticisms I have is that there are no synonymies, not even a basic checklist of map turtles with the authors of the species and dates of publications, although “taxonomic history” is discussed in each of the species accounts. This is another volume in the “Animal Natural History Series” from the University of Oklahoma Press which has published a number of fine books on North American herpetofauna, however like most of the books in the series, the color photographs are often very small and sometimes of poor quality (no doubt a criticism for the editors and publisher and not the authors). Although this book leans slightly to the science/technical side, I think there is much here that many armatures and hobbyist with interest for in-depth information on map turtles would find useful and accessible.

Dr. Bruce N. Waller is Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Youngstown State University. He received his Ph.D. in 1979 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His other works include Consider Ethics: Theory, Readings, and Contemporary Issues, Critical Thinking: Consider the Verdict, You Decide! Current Debates in Criminal Justice, You Decide! Current Debates in Contemporary Moral Problems, You Decide! Current Debates in Introductory Philosophy, You Decide! Current Debates in Ethics, and Coffee and Philosophy: A Conversational Introduction to Philosophy with Readings.

Dear Colleague,

 

Consider Ethics is based on the belief that undergraduate students from widely divergent backgrounds and levels of preparation can understand, appreciate, and benefit from the best and most insightful work on ethical theory. My students at Youngstown State University have provided solid evidence to substantiate that belief: they arrive at YSU from rough inner city schools, richly-funded suburban schools, and grossly underfunded rural schools. They come from the Appalachian region of southern Ohio and West Virginia, from the coal mining districts of Pennsylvania, and from the rust belt cities of northeast Ohio and they represent every ethnic group that arrived in Youngstown to work in the steel mills.

 

They come together to examine, explore and debate ethical theories, to share perspectives and insights, and to learn with and from one another. They demonstrate, year after year, that they are fully capable of the careful study of ethical theory, that they find the subject fascinating, and that they not only gain richer perspectives on ethics and a deeper understanding of their own views, but also make significant gains in their philosophical abilities and in their self-confidence for tackling difficult subjects. It is the success and the insights of those students that inspired this book, and that has guided the development of new editions.

 

Ethical theory is not an esoteric mystery, but instead the rigorous development of ideas and views that people of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds find fascinating. It is a subject of important historical insights, exciting contemporary developments, challenging arguments, and deep disagreements. The study of ethical study enables students to view contemporary ethical debates from new perspectives and different angles – often allowing them space and freedom to re-evaluate their beliefs on specific ethical issues.

 

What remains from earlier editions is the overall style and structure of the text: the major approaches to ethical theory, from classical to contemporary, are presented in an accessible conversational style, together with representative passages from major theorists. Every chapter includes challenging questions for reflection and discussion that pose difficult quandaries, avoid easy answers, and push students to think hard and reflectively about their own conclusions.

 

In the 3rd Edition, there are new exercises for every chapter, a number of new readings (both classical and contemporary), new boxed quotations, examples and questions. There are new specific debates on the question of performance-enhancing drugs as well as the issue of police use of deceptive interrogation practices, as well as new sections on value pluralism and on sentimentalism. All of the new material has been tested on my own long-suffering students, who have been wonderfully frank in telling me what material does – and does not – work.

Excellent text gets better

This already excellent text written by philosophy professor Dr.Bruce N.Waller just got better. It is an excellent choice as an introductory text in this field or for those of us who just want to understand the ethics not only of classical philosphical problems but of everyday challenges in our shared life in society. Waller uses a very readable style to explain the nature of these issues along with relevant readings.

Decent textbook

This was an assigned textbook for my ethics class. It was a decent enough textbook. Although I truly despise the narration by the author telling you what to think.

I truly don't understand why philosophy teachers don't just assign reading assignments by Actual philosophers rather than some guys interpretation of them.

An adequate introduction

Bruce N. Waller's "Consider Ethics: Theory, Readings, and Contemporary Issues" is for the most part an author-written text. Thus, the word "Readings" in the subtitle, while not totally inaccurate, is somewhat misleading. Other than the last chapter, which contains readings on current practical moral issues, the rest of the book is Waller's own description and analysis of the issues, with only an extremely brief primary-source reading (typically of three or four pages in length) at the end of the chapter.

Thankfully, Waller's discussion of the issues is fairly insightful and balanced. The issues he covers include most of the standard topics in theoretical ethics: utilitarianism, social contract ethics, egoism, relativism, pragmatism, virtue and care ethics, moral realism, free will and responsibility, etc. However, as already indicated, the "contemporary issues" section is confined to the last chapter. If one is looking for a text for an applied ethics class, this is not the one. Once again, let me stress that this is primarily a text in ethical theory.

That said, I will give my qualified recommendation. If one wants a text in theoretical ethics with few readings from other philosophers, Waller's book will do. However, the price, which is more than $90 new, is a consideration. There are excellent books in ethics on the market that can be had for less.

Save your time/ money

This book recapitulated a great deal of what was written in "The True Believer." The format of that book was (roughly): 1. General principle; 2. Brief historical example (2-3 sentences). This book fell down in that he offered NO specific examples of the things that he was citing (1) and much of what he said was an outright repetition of what he'd already said in his magnum opus (2).

To be honest: If a True Believer is a person that is trying to escape an unwanted self, how much more needs to be said? It's a real stretch to imagine that you can know what is going on in any one person's mind-- let alone well enough to fill up a book. And then to fill up that same book with witty aphorisms.

I gave it about 10 pages of my time and then had to put it down

Brilliant! An absolute gem of on marketing..

There are plenty of marketing books out there. So what makes this one stand out? Let's start with what this book is not. It's not one of those marketing text books that tries to blow you away with big marketing terms and concepts. There are enough of those out there, and honestly, most of them wouldn't work in the real world.

What this book is to me... is a little lighthouse. A pick-me-up guide to what marketing is really all about. Why marketing is so important, and if you are a marketing practitioner, why you fall in love with your job in the first place. It's a wonderful guide that will point you back into the right direction - your customer!
