Julia, Julia, Julia! There is much to be desired for a Julia Press Simmons book! Sassy was something different opposed to Julia's other works. But her descriptiveness in her characters is at an all time high! Sassy was just that sassified...her vulnerability was put out there, her pain and her desires. Sassy became real to me as all Julia's characters do! She is just too awesome at bringing a scene into your nostrils to where I wanted to puke at the stenches of Sassy's sorrow and untidiness during her heartbreak! That's what a good book is... SASSY! Thanks JP...

It's been a while since I read a book by Me Simmons. Sassy is a fast paced love story that reminded me of why I enjoyed her books to begin with. This is the perfect tale of a catch-22 situation. I can't wait to see what other drama Julia Press Simmons is going to bring back to her readers.

We All Have Been Addicted...

Have you ever found yourself only to lose yourself all over again? Have you ever been so addicted to a man?

Sassy is looking for a new start with her new job. She is ready to take over the world and make her relationship work with Mike. She stumbles onto Vince and that is when the trouble starts.

Now that we have established Sassy and her life, we fast forward and find Sassy in an addicted state. Her mother, Wanda, has come to rescue her daughter. What she finds is not her daughter but a shell spent on alcohol and tears. She does what any mother would and brings her daughter into reality and finds out how she got into her funkdafied state.

Sassy starts her story. She realizes she is being taken advantage of by her current boyfriend Mike, who has been using her. She finally gets the courage to park him on the curb with the garbage. She is hurt but life goes on. She has her new job and a different outlook on life. She's making friends and then here comes Vince. Vince becomes a drug for Sassy and when it hits her this is why we find her in an addicted state to Vince.

Will Sassy get the courage to leave Vince? Will her addiction overtake her? Stay tuned is what we are going to have to do.

Four-star read for the work. It kept my attention and made me remember a time I was addicted. Thumbs up to JPS for giving me a memory back in story form.

A Great Reference for Early 20th Century Architecture

This book is a replica of ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS FOR EVERY TYPE OF BUILDING: A PRACTICAL DRAFTING ROOM GUIDE FOR CONTRACTORS, BUILDERS, LUMBER DEALERS, MILLMEN, DRAFTSMEN, AND ARCHITECTS published in 1921. The original title is an appropriate one, as it was not intended for the general public looking for house plans or ideas for details but more for the building professional. Today, however, it provides a great reference resource for those interested in restoring or improving an early twentieth century building. For houses, there are some complete working drawing sets in addition to various details for stairs, fireplaces, bookcases, and even fences, among many others. Also included are drawings for an Ice House, a Modern Photo Play House (movie theater), and various Barns. It is highly recommended for those who enjoy technical information.

Very interesting floor plans

I live in an old house and have used this book many times during remodeling. It has been a great reference for how the layout of my house may have changed over the years.
If I were ever going to build a new home, I would use one of these classic floor plans as a guide and make adjustments to make it either larger or more modern. Love the authenticity of this book.

Great reference if you have an old house that you are restoring or adding on to

Just bought a turn of the century house. Great to see old details so if I'm restoring or taking something apart I know what I'm probably dealing with. The only issue I have is that the drawings are crammed on the pages.

About the Author
Percy Lubbock, (1879-1965) was an English man of letters, known as an essayist, critic and biographer. He was educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge. He won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for 1922, with his memoir of childhood summer holidays at Earlham Hall in Norfolk. He became an émigré, and lived in Gli Scafari on the Gulf of Spezia. Towards the end of his life he went blind. Remarkably well-placed socially, his intellectual connections included E. M. Forster, a Cambridge contemporary, Edith Wharton (a member of her Inner Circle from about 1906), Howard Sturgis and Bernard Berenson. He reviewed, anonymously in the columns of the Times Literary Supplement, significant modern novels including Forster's Howard's End. His 1921 book The Craft of Fiction ('the official textbook of the Modernist aesthetics of indirection') became a straw man for writers including Virginia Woolf and Graham Greene, who disagreed with his rather formalist view of the novel. Among his other works: Samuel Pepys (1909), A Book of English Prose (1913) and Shades of Eton (1929).

This, like E. M. Forster's "Aspects of the Novel," is an essential work of criticism, and it's nice to see it back in print. Lubbock's outlook is an extension of Henry James's. He is more immediately accessible than the Master, and he illustrates the "craft" by reference to classic novels such as Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina," Flaubert's "Madame Bovary," Thackeray's "Vanity Fair," and of course James's own works, particularly "The Ambassadors." Lubbock, Forster, F. R. Leavis's "The Great Tradition," and Ian Watt's "Rise of the Novel" give you what you need to know if you want to understand the central canon in Anglo-American and European fiction.

A major work of literary criticism

Lubbock 's subject is the craft-of- fiction and he looks at work of Flaubert, Henry James, and Tolstoy in order to teach the tricks of the trade. Much of what he speaks about concerns point- of- view and much about the virtue of 'showing' rather than 'telling'. In one of the work's defining passages he writes, ".. the art of fiction does not begin until the novelist thinks of the story as a matter to be shown, to be so exhibited that it will tell itself To hand over the reader the facts of the story merely as so much information- this is no more than to state the 'argument' of the book... The book is not a row of facts, it is a single image; the facts have no validity in themselves. It is not the simple art of narrative, but the comprehensive art of fiction that I am considering' and in fiction there can be no appeal to any authority outside the book itself."

For Lubbock the consummate master of the techniques of 'showing' is James. And a central part of the work is devoted to analysis of the technique of 'the master'.

A great siddur with a fresh, yet still authentic, perspective

I have davened with the Artscroll siddur since I became religious almost 9 years ago, and I was looking for a change. The Artscroll is a classic for many good reasons, but I've read most of the commentary already. In the last year or so, I've started to look into more Religious Zionist type works, and they really resonate with me. As I see it, Religious Zionism can be mostly distilled to the following idea: the establishment of the State of Israel was an event that has extremely important implications for Judaism. More generally, we see from this that Judaism (at least in some respects) must tailor itself to the current day. If we only look back at a static Judaism, we lose the significance of what Hashem has done for us in our era and negate the fact that we serve to offer any contribution at all.

Why am I saying all of this? Well, I believe that the Koren Sacks Siddur is a siddur for those who believe what I have said above. There is a great importance in Judaism in looking to previous generations for guidance in what to do today, but that doesn't mean we need to live as if we were in those generations. We need to be authentically Jewish, but in today's world. The wonderful translation from Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks is an example of this. The way he translates the davening is quite poetic and gives new and fresh meaning to the words we say every day. His commentary draws on classic sources, but they also draw from more contemporary sources and events as well. I've found the commentary to be quite uplifting and to give insights that I've never seen before.

For those of you who have use Artscroll, Koren siddurs have the Hebrew on the left page and English on the right (opposite of Artscroll), so that takes some getting used to. After a couple of days, I was fine. I gave the siddur 4/5 stars because there are a few places where the siddur's nusach is different from the Artscroll, and it really confused me. For example, I was at a bris yesterday, and the last couple of paragraphs simply aren't in the Koren siddur. I'm not sure why that is the case, but it bothered me. In the reviews for the paperback version, some people complained about the font size on the compact size being too small, but I haven't found that to be a problem. The hardcover version actually lays somewhat flat, so you don't always need something to hold the pages down (which is great).

All in all, if you're looking to try a new siddur, go for it!

A breath of fresh air

Has great introductory material, notes, and guides on what to do. For those wondering this Siddur isn't transliterated like the Artscroll Seif edition. Not a big deal for me I can read Hebrew. The layout is nice and easy on the eyes. The only feature I don't particularly care for (although not enough to give it a lower rating) is the Koren font. A lot of people say they like it but I actually think it's distracting. I'll get used to it as time goes on.

I loved this book! I read a smaller portion in vanity fair and wanted to read more. I'm so glad I did.

The author writes with so much humility and honesty. I could definitely relate to her experiences even if I haven't been in the exact situations. Her writing was totally engaging and I basically read the entire thing within a day. She seemed like the kind of person I'd love to be friends with.

I wish it were longer, and I wish she'd let us know what she's up to now.

Perfect summer read

I was so excited to read this book as soon as it came out. It doesn't disappoint. Refreshingly, Ms. Bloom is very generous with details, names and places. She's also very candid about her own downfall. I was left wishing the book was a little longer--that there was more time spent on the Hollywood portion of the story. Hilarious details about Tobey Maguire make this (fairly pricey) e- book worth reading for that alone.
Ms. Bloom keeps the pace moving in the perfect summer book. Very entertaining!

Fantastic - Especially For A First Time Writer

This was a great book and, as others have said, a very fast read. Bloom takes you quickly through her formative childhood, but gives you enough detail to provide a background against which her later actions can be contrasted. She makes some adult decisions that could be judged harshly, but really, who wouldn't have chosen the same path, given the circumstances? The entire story has a very human aspect to it and the detailed information she provides about the notable people in her orbit is fascinating. If it was a fictional story it would still be good but hard to believe. The fact that it all happened in real life makes it all the more engaging. I highly recommend it even if you're not a poker player or even interested in the game.
