I liked this book. People who are interested in John Abercrombie should be interested in reading this book... One of the things that was especially interesting is the author's writing style and ability to get his message across. Overall, this book was very well written and I highly recommend to those who have not read. To those who have read it - read it again!

Has some problems

I would have to agree with one of the other reviews here. Although it is well written most of the time, there are some mistakes. As of this writing I'm only through Chapter 1, so I can't speak for the rest of the book. Read on for some problems with this first chapter.
In the examples given by the authors they use commands that have not yet been introduced. While you can guess what the commands purpose is the authors should have explained it before they used it. Another problem is with the challenges in the first chapter. While the first four challenges are possible, the fifth is not if all your understanding is garnered from the first chapter. They ask you to write a program that is impossible to write without having read deeper into the book, specifically you need to use the 'if' command to write it. I also noticed while looking at the answer to this challenge in the appendix that there was a bug large enough that it would not have compiled if I had copied it.
Overall, from my experience with the first chapter, it's good, but be prepared to bang your head when the authors don't explain something.

Fundamentally flawed as a package

I have just started working with the book and while it seems fine and straightforward thus far, the package is flawed at a very basic level. The accompanying CD contains quite a bit but what it does not contain is CodeWarrior (the program referenced in the text) or a similiar program for actually working with C++. To be perfectly clear, you must first acquire software elsewhere before you be able to begin using the information and exercises in the text AT ALL. It strikes me as a very serious oversight / error on the part of the authors to have not included at least a trial version of the required software in order to let people use the book upon receipt.

Good Book When Taking With Another Course

This book is one of my favorite C++ books. Now this book will only confuse you if your not in a C++ programming class. When I was taking a C++ class I found out it really helped out when taken with the class. Some of the other reviewers are right in the part where they say some examples have concepts not yet introduced. However, I found out that if you read over the concept after your teacher has gone over it in class it helps give you a clearer understanding. I would give this book between 4 and 4 1/4 stars if possible, mainly because the text does contain a couple of errors. However, since this book helped me out so much I'll give it a 5. This book even has an introduction to windows programming. Although it just goes over message boxes in dept it does give you some motivation for learning the Windows 32 API.

This one made me laugh out loud a lot. Depite the excellent action and story...this was so funny!

It is rare that an author can bring more than a chuckle out of me. However, Kuzneski manages to make me "belly laugh" rather often throughout his books. Jones and Payne have a great relationship, and provide comic relief at all the best times. Kuzneski should be a billionaire with the level his story telling acheives. He is a true Master of the Thriller Novel! This one will not dissapoint. As long as you have a brain and a sense of humor, you will love it!

good follow up in the series

I have been waiting for this new entry in the Payne and Jones series for a year now and it was well worth the wait. There are afew authors whose books i buy every year: these used to be Sydney Sheldon, Mary Higgins Clark, Steve Berry, David Baldacci, James Grippando, Sam Bourne (after having read every Earle Stanley Gardner (perry mason) book and every Agatha Christie book. Every now and then i try a new writer but usually it turns out to be a downer. But not Kuzneski. Finally i can add a writer to my list. His book all feature the heroes Payne and Jones, 2 ex army buddies, and their friend who is the head of Interpol. The first book, The Plantation, was not that good (thank god i didn'r read that one first, but from the second book onwards the series keeps getting better. This new entry in the series is also good and features the usual heroes and wisecracks and good plot. If you like Dan Brown, Steve Berry, sam Bourne and or Indiana Jones, you will love Chris Kuzneski

Wait, I've Read This Before!

When I got a notice that a new Chris Kuzneski was coming out I ordered it to my kindle. It was this hardback book, The Secret Crown. As soon as i started reading I thought it was familiar and it was. I had read the paperback edition that came out in 2010. Why was the book released as a new book, (just because it is now in hardback)? I read so many books that I don't always remember the titles I've read. If a hardback comes out with a current publication date I think most people assume it is a new book. Why the paperback two years early and now the hardback? It was a really good story and I would give it 4 stars, I am just disappointed when it was released in hardback it wasn't noted as first time in hardback, previously in paperback.

This book is definitely worth to read it! Especially for those fresh engineers who work in a wafer fab. It also suitable for those graduated students who want to do study about semiconductor manufacturing.

The production management in semiconductor manufacturing is always a difficult task due to the nature of a wafer fabrication. A modern semiconductor front-end process consists of several hundred steps, high reentrant routes, parallel and serial batching processes, and dozen hundreds of equipment with over one hundred functionalities; no even say there are a lot of randomness inside of the production system. No matter which performance measures that practitioners prefer to keep in tracing, determining appropriate production strategies are a challenge because the affections to the wafer fab after conducting them are complicated and too hard to be measured. Although many of previous researches in semiconductor manufacturing proposed a plenty of insight about performance improvement, only a few studies had been implemented in practice.

This book summarizes more than 15 years of author’s production operation experience. All these true stories provide a great opportunity for those people who intend to join this industry or to do related academic researches. If you had read Factory Physics (W.J. Hopp and M.L. Spearman) or Optimizing Factory Performance (J.P. Ignizio), you would understand what I’m talking about. Fairly, this book didn’t tell you how to optimize a wafer fab. But if you aim at this way, this book provide everything you should know before you step out and make a move. For example, in Chapter 3, some key issues have been mentioned, and which are not even involved in most of academic papers related to facilities planning or capacity expansion planning. But they are all real and well known in this industry.

In my opinion, production management is absolutely a science. I have a PhD degree in IE field and I am major in Operations Research. In the past ten years, I applied a lot of OR techniques to address many operational decisions. Quantitative method is very important for achieving a high level of system performance. However, production management can also be an art. The fact is the true system efficiency might never be determined because it depends on which performance index you choose. This book attempts to cover almost every important parts in fab manufacturing, I believe that readers can be beneficial from it and inspired to pursue their own targets.

SECOND BOOK IN AN AMAZING SERIES!

I have been just blown away by these books. I have hope that they are the new bible. This one reveals secrets that you have (perhaps) wondered about as you have moved through Christianity (if you are a Christian) and it is definitely an interesting if not life changing read for those of you who have moved beyond what religion hands you on a plate. I have always questioned the meanings of scripture as interpreted by church leaders and have not felt at home in the many churches I have gone to. This book and the many others that have set me on a metaphyiscal path makes me feel like I have come home. I am trying to use my new power as an enlightened being and will see what happens.

Take the Red Pill

This book is the end of self-help. I have no desire to read another self-help book, and in fact will now give away the remainder of my book collection in that domain. That is how good A Balance of Self is. To say that it is a profoundly inspiring gift to humanity is almost an understatement. Winfried Sedhoff has given us one of the greatest resources I have come across for self-awareness.

I see the book akin to the red pill in the movie The Matrix. The main character was tempted to take the blue pill, which would allow him to live in an illusion. He chose the red pill, which allowed him to wake up to a dark reality. The illusion meant life went on as normal; reality was a constant struggle. There is a sense in the book that we struggle in life and maintain a sense of delusion. The only way out is to face reality as it is, even when looking at it is so exceedingly unpleasant. The only way through our struggles and heartaches is ultimately to face reality. Winfried guides us through the process in his landmark work.

A Balance of Self is not without flaws, unsurprisingly given that this is Winfriend's first publication. I am certain it will expand out into revisions, supporting resources, and derivative works. I found the initial introduction to his Balance of Self model and Validation Loop Theory to be quite challenging, and feel it could be simplified for a broader audience. I find real-life examples and stories are the best illustrative tools to explain heady theories, and the book could have used more of these - the most compelling section is the introduction, freely available from the book's website, that describes the author's journey of discovery of the underlying principles and theories on which the book is based.

Winfried also often points the reader to seek professional help several times through the text, without going into specifics. I have sought therapy from several different providers in the past and ultimately have ended in disappointment. Even though so many different problems absolutely require professional support, this must always come with a caution and a guidance in how to find the right help.

Having read through it once, I plan to dig back in and particularly focus on the sections specifically targeting my key areas of need. I will not go into detail regarding the Balance of Self model here as it is amply described in the 17 page PDF available on the website. Suffice to say that it really does hit the proverbial nail on the head, and is the best and most severe wake-up call that I have experienced in the book form.

ERNEST L. ELIEL is W. R. Kenan, Jr. Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author of Stereochemistry of Carbon Compounds and Elements of Stereochemistry, coeditor of the Wiley series, Topics in Stereochemistry, and coauthor of Conformational Analysis. The recipient of numerous academic and scientific awards and honors, Professor Eliel is Past President of the American Chemical Society and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. SAMUEL H. WILEN is Professor of Chemistry at City College, City University of New York, where he has taught since 1957. Professor Wilen is the author of Tables of Resolving Agents and Optical Resolutions, coauthor of Enantiomers, Racemates and Resolutions, and coeditor of the Wiley series, Topics in Stereochemistry. LEWIS N. MANDER has been Professor of Chemistry at the Australian National University since 1980. He has held visiting appointments at Cambridge University, California Institute of Technology, and Harvard University. This is a classic book by a world-renowned expert. I am a practicing organic chemist, and this book has never failed to answer even the most obscure questions I have had about stereochemistry. It is highly recommended as an indispensible reference on the subject.

A great compendium of organic stereochemistry

I bought this book about 5 months ago while taking an advanced organic synthesis class. I wasn't sure if it would be of help. But, there aren't many comparable stereochemistry books available.

The money was well spent!

If there's a common question regarding stereochemistry, it'll have the answer in there. If there's an obscure question regarding stereochemistry, it'll also have the answer. Kudos to the authors for cramming so much information into a text.

When I've needed more material than the text presents, ample references are provided. Bear in mind, I'm talking about exact experimental procedures, and not general experiments. The authors cover experiments, their significance, and references. When I've needed to duplicate an experiment, I check the references.

I have as yet to come across a stereochemistry question that the authors haven't addressed. This is surprising, since I'm knee deep in stereochemistry. Presently, the book in on my desk, not my bookshelf.

Good book - would recommend

A summarised version of tips and tricks to use in interviews.
I don't usually like long reads and self help books but this one is short and to the point. It focuses on a lot of what I found myself doing wrong in interviews and how to improve them and focus on your strengths.
The book had some formatting issues on my kindle and I had to reduce my font size to a minimum to see all the tables.

Overall though a good guide to have and it actually helped me to get the role I wanted!

I read this book twice before interviewing for a Project Coordinator role. Sandra has great tips and sample questions in helping people prepare for all situations and questions during interviews. I felt much more relaxed going into my interview and ended up being offered the role straight away! I highly recommend this book as an essential aid to acing any interview and getting that perfect project role.

About the Author

ANDREAS TOLK, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at Old Dominion University. He supported the development of the discipline of modeling and simulation with his publications for a variety of modeling and simulation conferences as well as his contributions to various NATO research activities in the domains of combat modeling, command and control, and studies and analysis.

Text book review for M&S practitioners.

Been active in the modeling and simulation (M&S) field for over 20 years. The text is the single most comprehensive review of the M&S domain that I have ever encountered. Enjoy the practical examples that illustrate teaching points. Written with a touch of humor to make it a more entertaining/interesting read.
