A great book for cops

This is a great book for cops wheather you are a Believer or someone who is looking for answers. I spent 32 years with a "big city" police department and have found this book to have biblical answers to the questions that have gone through my mind while dealing with situations that most cops face. I would recommend it for an individual study or even with a small group.

Very Good Book

I'm not even a police officer, yet, but I got this book to give me some perspective from a theological standpoint at many of the issues cops face every day for years on end. As a Catholic, and if I read hard enough, some discrepancies in teaching or interpretation of Scripture may be evident in this book, but that still doesn't make it any less worthy.

The readings are right-on and very insightful, prayerful, and meditative. It's a little pricey, but this book is worth $50 bucks... no.. $100 bucks. A must read for any Christians, and especially those who are in law enforcement.

A Beautiful Book

In his introduction Neil Gaiman describes this 158 page book as a collection of B-Sides and Rarities. That is a good analogy but, if you are an admirer of Neil's work, don't think that this book is of lesser quality than his more popular collections. Gaiman is a great, great writer and, whatever the topic, his effortless prose and poetry are as enjoyable as ever here. There doesn't seem any place on the net that says exactly what is in this book so I will share that with you.

1. Introduction - a few pages from Neil that tell a little bit about what you will find here.

2. Before You Read This - a poem that any fan of Neil's would recognize as his (I mean that in a good way).

3. Featherquest - the author's first published story from 1984, with the full text for the first time. Neil has never spoken too well of this story but I found it quite enjoyable. He thinks this fantasy story is derivative, but I liked it anyway. Everything is a bit derivative of something else, right?

4. Jerusalem - a short, intelligent story good enough to have been included in any of his collections.

5. Feminine Endings - same as above.

6. Orange - an odd but effective SF story that is comprised only of answers from someone who is being interviewed.

7. Orphee - CD liner notes written for the late Kathy Acker.

8. Ghosts In The Machines - written at Halloween for the New York Times - "almost an op-ed piece".

9. The Annotated Brothers Grimm: Grimmer Than You Thought - an introduction to a book.

10. Black House: A Novel - book review of the Stephen King and Peter Straub work.

11. Summerland - another book review.

12. View From The Cheap Seats - a piece about Neil's evening at the Oscars when he was up for an award for writing the screenplay for Coraline. A very well done account of his evening that gives us a peak behind the curtain. It somewhat reminds me of the fiction story he wrote about going to Hollywood to discuss making a movie called The Goldfish Pool And Other Stories.

13. Once Upon A Time - a piece on Fairy Tales written for the Guardian when Stardust the movie came out.

14. Dresden Dolls - a piece about Amanda Palmer's former duo and their recent reunion. I've read many, many pieces about music and what Gaiman does here happens very rarely. He puts you inside his subjects and in himself as he relays what he is experiencing. This enjoyment of this piece has nothing to do with whether you like the subject or not. Intimate and revealing.

15. Introduction: Hothouse - an introduction to a Brian Aldiss novel.

16. Entitlement Issues (from my Blog) - a question from a fan regarding an author's responsibility to his readers and Neil's laugh-out-loud response. I won't spoil the line about George R.R. Martin.

17. Why Defend Freedom Of Icky Speech (from my Blog) - another interesting Q&A, this one covers censorship.

18. Harvey Awards Speech 2004 - Neil's speech about comics.

19. Nebula Awards Speech 2005 - Neil's speech at the 40th anniversary of the Science Fiction Writer's Association.

20. Conjunctions - another poem. I liked this one too.

Obviously we will all have different levels of interest in the subject of these pieces but if you have read this far you are certainly a Neil Gaiman fan and this book won't disappoint you.

The other thing is that this is not only a great collection of stories it is also a great BOOK. The physical object is way cool. A tiny 4 3/4" x 6 1/4" hardcover issued without a dust jacket. The Gahan Wilson black artwork is embossed directly into the gold cover for a beautiful effect. This is a limited edition volume with only 1500 copies produced - 500 signed and 1000 unsigned. Since this material is difficult or impossible to find elsewhere I have to believe that this book will someday be a highly sought after collector's item.

A wonderful collection of rarities

A Little Gold Book of Ghastly Stuff by Neil Gaiman is a collection of rarities, or as Neil states in his introduction 'B-Sides'. It contains short stories such as Featherquest, Neil's first professional sale, in its original long form, poetry, essays such as an homage to the Dresden Dolls, book reviews, blog posts and award acceptance speeches. I immensely enjoyed reading this collection which shows the versatility of Neil's work and the dedication he brings to the written word. I waited 6 years for the final installment of Borderland Press's Little Books and it surpassed my expectations, marking a perfect end for a very special series. There is an unsigned second printing available and I recommend you do grab one while they are still available.
