About the Author
Sophia has been writing novels, short stories, and poems since she was still losing her baby teeth. Throughout her high school career she amassed an impressive 35 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards including two National Gold Medals for science fiction short stories. As a Scholastic alumnus, she joins the ranks of many great authors including Truman Capote, Sylvia Plath, and Joyce Carol Oates. Can't Wait for Radio!!!

You guys might want to grab a snack and relax, because this is going to be a long one. For a while after I finished this book all I could think was Wow. Let me say right off the bat, it's been a long time since tears have actually fallen from my eyes from a book. I'm always skeptical when I hear that a book made someone cry because it has happened to me so rarely. But it happened to me with this book. Granted, it was 11 o'clock at night and I may have been more emotional than usual, but still.

Second of all, I should mention that this book was written by a nineteen year-old. Wait, did you read that correctly? Yes, 19 years old. Sophia attended NYU this year as a freshman and is now someone I look up to immensely. (Keep your eyes out for an author interview coming soon!!!)

I like to write on sticky notes and put them in my books when I get excited about stuff, and my copy of Vinyl now has plenty of neon pink sticky notes throughout its pages. One of the first things I wrote was that I really like Ronja. Ronja is the daughter of a "mutt" (someone who has been experimented on and has mutated genes), and as such, she has been discriminated against her whole life. She is constantly treated as a lower class citizen and in turn, this has hardened her against the world and she doesn't trust anyone to be kind to her. Because everyone around her treats her like a horrible person, she has begun to act the way they expect her to. But she is fiercely loyal to her family, and works tirelessly to get food for them. I'll admit, sometimes Ronja was rude to everyone around her to the point that it was slightly frustrating but her whole life had taught her to be harsh to protect herself. I imagined Ronja with short, curly hair and a face that has her strength and resilience written all over it.

The first thing I noticed about the book is that it has amazing writing. Hanson has written short stories that have been published before, so she definitely has experience with writing but I was pleasantly surprised at how exceptional it is. It reminds me of how Christopher Paolini wrote Eragon at such a young age, even though his writing far surpassed what was expected of someone his age. This book is testament to the fact that young people can write just as well as older authors, if they have enough experience. The writing style and the fast-paced plot reminded me of both Casssandra Clare's City of Bones and Marie Lu's Legend series.

The pace of Vinyl was fast in a perfect way. There was action when I wanted action, and emotional conversations when I wanted things to slow down a little. The plot was constantly being thrown forward by new twists and turns that I never saw coming. (If I really think about it, there were almost too many? plot twists. I loved it but sometimes it felt like it was a little much.) One of my favorite parts of the whole book was when Ronja experienced her first "jam" (similar to a concert) and the way Ronja tries to describe instruments without knowing their correct names.

This book is pretty much the epitome of all distopian fiction, which makes it perfect for fans of that genre and the concept of a totalitarian government using music to control it's masses is so blissfully unique.

Finally, the ending. I couldn't stop reading once I had about 60 pages left. I had to know what happened to Roarke and Ronja and every moment was better than the last. I loved the spy vibes that were going on during the secret mission in the end. I also loved how B.A. Terra and Evie are. I also adore Henry and Ronja's friendship.

This book is full of independent but simultaneously loyal and tough characters and it's perfect for fans of the Legend series. I'm so glad I got to read this book so now I can recommend it to everyone I meet!

Okay, "What's the catch?" you ask? Well, there were only two teeny tiny issues I found, but I say teeny tiny because they really didn't affect my overall enjoyment of the book. The first thing is that a few aspects of Ronja's world are slightly confusing. Especially in the beginning, it's difficult to figure out what a Singer is, what The Day Song is, what an Off is, and what a shiny is. You can kind of figure it out from context clues but more elaboration on these vocabulary words would have been nice. I still don't fully understand how The Music works and how it controls the citizens and their emotions. Second, towards the end of the book Roark is willing to sacrifice something huge for Ronja and I just wasn't quite convinced that it was realistic. It made for an awesome plot twist but it just didn't seem like he would really do something like that after only knowing Ronja for a couple of weeks. Sorry if that seemed vague, I didn't want to give away any spoilers.

All in all, I'm so glad I got to review this book, I would have probably picked it up myself if Sophia hadn't sent me a copy. Huge thank you again, Sophia!

Amazing book!

I have read a lot of books and never written a review, but my goodness, this book deserves all the five stars. I finished reading Vinyl a few weeks ago and I can not stop thinking about it. I NEED more, I will even admit to following Miss Hanson on social media just so I know as soon as number two is released. If you're reading reviews to decide whether you want to read this book just stop and read it. You won't regret it.

This isn't just another young adult book built to fill the "dystopian fiction" void in your life. It's brilliant. Kept me up until five in the morning because I couldn't sleep until I'd finished it. Invest in this amazing story and read it on a weekend, because you won't want to stop for anything, not work, not school, probably not even some sort of medical emergency. I can't wait for Book 2!

Although even the closest star (Proxima Centauri) is so far away (25 1/4 trillion miles) that humanity will probably never travel to it, Ferguson (Prisons of Light: Black Holes) demonstrates why knowing its distance from us is important, and not just for reasons of wish fulfillment. For only by drawing an accurate scale map of the universe, she explains, can scientists estimate its age, one of the most hotly contested issues of our time. Ferguson begins with attempts in antiquity to establish the distance to the sun and the five planets seen by the naked eye. She discusses the findings of Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo, and how each drew on the others' work. Her simple explanations of the discoveries of stellar parallax, the Doppler effect and redshift, and of absorption spectra make important scientific concepts clear for general readers. She goes on to elucidate how astronomers determine how far away other stars are by using a type of star called Cepheid, as well as the spectacular stellar self-destructions known as supernovae as "standard candles." This book weaves lucid science and history together into a most fascinating tapestry. You will learn about the search for the size of the universe, but you will also learn about the world around you. You will learn how science works, and how people work. You will learn what we know, and how much more we have to learn. This is a beautifully crafted book and well worth the time of scientists, historians, and normal people too!

I was wowed by this book completely. The narrative of the relationship between the Catholic church and the sciences alone made it worthwhile. If you haven't read a book such as this and think you know what really happened with Galileo Galilei... well, you probably don't.

Almost a really good book

This is a very readable book, with many ups and downs. It tells the story of key contributors to our understanding of the universe and their quest to measure it in their time and with the tools available to them. It also does a very good job of explaining some basic concepts. It doesn't do such a good job with more complex concepts. And there are some simple concepts that just don't need to be explained repetitively.
For instance, the explanations and diagrams explaining parallax are very good. Sometime after that the term parsec appears in the text without any explanation at all. Another example: Cepheid stars are fundamental to current attempts to measure the distant objects, and that is made very clear. But why we can and should depend on Cepheids is not explained. A final example: I don't know how many times she explains that 10 with an exponent menas one followed by that number of zeros, or preceded by that number of zeroes for a negative exponent - but it is way, way more times than necessary and occurs throughout the entire book.
A second edition, perhaps with better editing, could easily be much better and be a very good book. Never-the-less, this book is interesting and generally easy to read, and covers a lot of ground about the participants.

Studies of food and foodways are vital to exploring past (and present) cultures. The food remains discovered at the port of Quseir al-Qadim are especially revealing, offering important information about the ancient spice trade and the food practices of those engaged in this trade. Quseir al-Qadim acted as a transhipment port in the Indian Ocean spice trade during both the Roman and medieval Islamic periods. It is located on the Red Sea coast of Egypt and was active between ca. AD 1-250 (Myos Hormos) and again during ca. AD 1050-1500 (Kusayr). This monograph describes the analysis and interpretation of the botanical remains (foodstuffs, wood) recovered during the excavations that took place between 1999-2003, conducted by the University of Southampton, UK. The spectacular preservation conditions at Quseir al-Qadim meant that food remains and wood were found in abundance, including fragments of onion skin, citrus rind, garlic cloves, aubergine seeds, banana skins, wooden bowls, spoons and combs, as well as many of the Eastern spices traded through the port, such as black pepper, ginger, cardamom and betelnut. These remains are fully analysed and discussed under three overarching themes: trade, agricultural innovation and food consumption. The results provide significant new evidence for the Eastern trade and for the changes in agriculture that indirectly resulted from it. They also allow real insights into the lives of those working in the ports. They show the changes in the nature and scale of the Indian Ocean trade between the Roman and Islamic periods, as well as a major shift in the way the inhabitants of the ports saw themselves and located themselves in the wider world. Richly illustrated and thought-provoking, this volume identifies how studies of food enable fuller dialogues regarding 'globalization' and also highlights clearly the importance of food in the dynamics of cultural identity and geopolitics.

The book is intentionally more mathematical than Lewis Carroll's books, but for those of us who enjoyed Alice's earlier adventures there are many interesting flashbacks to those inimitable characters: the Red Queen, Tweedle-Dum and his twin brother, the Mad Hatter ... The text is filled with humour, wit, and verses of poetry. Part 1 contains the story in six chapters, each of which concludes with a problem set; Part 2 is more mathematical, and looks at the axiom systems, and gives solutions to the problems. The presentation, with its old-time borders, script headings, and cartoon drawings evokes the spirit of the original Alice.

Not a very good book to read

The only reason why I bought this book was because it was required for my Geometry class. I thought it would be an interesting book, but ohhh my godd was I wrong. The writing was very dry and I honestly understood nothing from it! My professor also sucked at explaining the content, so I was confused the entire semester! It was a waste of my money!!!

Nice concept. Out of date exsicution.

I love the idea of the book, to explain math functions in a mix narrative/ theoretical fabric. I would not say the narrative is superficial, but rather, the explanation of "hierarchies" are determined by social relations to class and gender, not influence by the advent of informatics and computer science. The variables, and punchline jokes are not contemporary, quite jarring at female intelligence and acceptance in technical occupations. Certain areas of academia did not exist when this book was writen. I would not recommend this book as assigned reading, because it is very hard to distinguish what you need to believe in order to understand the mathematics, mixed with the social injustice accusations of how the world 'is' that certainly ride the tolerance of my attention. I would, perhaps, read this out loud to young students, after practice and editing of the material.

Might be great but not for the mathematically challenged

I have a wire antenna and have been disappointed with its performance so I started researching vertical antennas and bought this book to support that. This book is NOT for the mathematically challenged such as myself, if you really understand math or have a strong engineering background than you will probably get much more out of this book than I did. I was able to pick up on several concepts to improve antenna performance and use other books/the internet to find more information to explain those concepts in "English". I hesitated to give the book a 2 rating because I'm pretty sure that if I could understand that math I would have gotten much more out it but while it give me enough to at least know what questions to ask, it certainly didn't answer my questions in a format that was useful to me.
