Context is everything...

i admit to having become a Tokitsu Sensei fan....for budoka on the bun bu ryodo pilgrimage this is a must read....provides wonderful insights and innumerable 'AHAAA!' moments regarding the philosophical elements that underpin and find expression in the various kata....after this read Evanescence and Form: An Introduction to Japanese Culture by Charles Shiro Inouye...if you grasp what is offered in these complementary texts it will influence what you bring to the physical manifestation of your chosen art...every time you enter into a kata ( i deliberately avoid the oxymoronic 'do a kata')you are stepping into a living stream which flows through the now...for those who know, no proof necessary...for those who don't....none possible...peace

A fascinating and enlightening read, highly recommended

There is more to the martial arts than fighting techniques. "The Katas: The Meaning Behind the Movements" looks at the katas, a philosophical principle that connects much of Japan's many martial arts, the underlying goal of a dedication to perfection and the endless pursuit of bettering oneself. With much eastern philosophy blended in, "The Katas" is an intriguing collection of principles and makes for a fascinating and enlightening read, highly recommended.

Good, but very deep... It won't make you a better martial artist but nice to know some of the philosophy and thinking behind it

Hmm lets see. Usually when I shop for Karate books it is either about its history, (mis)interpretations, transmissions, applications, and a bit of Zen.

This one is worth a read to get an idea of the "Japanese" influence and thinking/psyche behind the Karate katas. After all, the Kata we see in modern Japanese Karate differ very much from Okinawan or even Chinese southern systems they may have descended from. It's a little difficult for me to relate to some of the thinking or principles... As I am of Chinese descent I expected maybe I could empathise with the whole being a certain ethnicity means thinking a certain way. But I guess the cultures are far too different when you aren't born into and raised in it. Although a way of life or system of fighting may be decscended from Buddhist, Zen, or Confucian principles, their effects on people's lives are only through how these things/principles are interpreted. Some admirable, some laughable. I'm not talking about the Japanese history presented in this book about Kata philosphy, but even in my own interpretation of Chinese history and beliefs I've grown up with. Some good, some laughably bad.

It also feel a little pedantic in that the Japanese "way" is at times portrayed to be superior. But this may be my subjective point of view. The Chapter on Seppukku: The Cornerstone of the Warrior's Kata is an example of why I said that. No matter what history or society views it, at the end of the day there is nothing romantic about suicide or death. I guess this is where I draw the line when eastern and western philosophies bump heads. Where does it go wrong?

It was fascinating to read the author's version of an account of the literary Right wing writer Mishima who committed seppukku in 1970. I briefly encountered this person in Kanazawa Hirokazu's "Karate: My Life" autobiography (translated in English). Kanazawa Kancho is grandmaster of the Shotokan International Federeation (SKIF) and is now 82 years old. He gave a brief chapter on being introduced to this Mishima when he come back from teaching abroad. He taught him one class saying he'll see him next week not knowing what Mishima was planning to do the next day(!).

However I must praise the author's honest commentary on Japanese society and the conflict of self and identity in a nation that is both proud of its achievements yet uncomfortable when it looks at its past which shows seemingly drastically different cultural views on death and its place in the world. This turmoil and conflct is something we learn from and propels us to a brighter and peaceful coexistance. Not that my practicing Tekki Shodan (and others) a million times with this philiosophy in mind will actually achieve this, mind.

Disappointing

I've had this as a while as a MCG SuperFan from the Strange Kickstarter, but happy I can put a review now.

The Guidebook starts with 10 pages of fiction. I'm normally not a fan of this, but it is pretty standard.

20 pages on life in the Ninth World. Some interesting stuff, along with some random tables for a quick community.

The main part is not quite 180 pages of setting, which you would expect. The Steadfast gets a small amount of information on some new locations. The Beyond actually gets less pages.

Lostrei, Vralk and the Frozen South are neighbors that get some attention. The Rayskell Cays are further away, and the Lands of the Dawn are are on the other side of the mega-continent. Oh, it's a mega-continent now. This was new to me, but I could have just missed it.

The Frozen South is an interesting place, but you better be hardy to live there.

Lostrei - the land of the Gaians. The land that the Amber Priests want to invade - may be the best place to live, and this really puts the whole invasion thing in a different light.

Vralk - I just hate this place. Evil, evil, evil. I started reading it and I just see "Like the Red Wizards of Thay, but MORE EVIL". It could be fun to do an EVIL game there, but I personally don't want to play or adventure in a level of hell. There is one NPC that it could be interesting to work with, and I see that as the only saving grace of this nation.

Lands of the Dawn - the Uraeyl do seem to be an alien species that makes sense - they don't see humans as sentient. Sad that this story will probably lead to extermination at some point.

There are some more character options, and creatures for the various lands.

My disappointment comes down to I think Numenera hasn't developed as I hoped. It's a lot of "This is a good idea, here's another good idea" but I don't find a game that I can run for session after session in it. I'm sure that's not the case for others, but unfortunately it is for me.

Superb Summary of the Reformed Faith

This is the best summary of the Reformed Christian faith that any student of divinity can get hold of. It should be required reading for every pastor.
A Faith to Live By is a short systematic theology, particularly attractive for the christian layman or laywoman. It covers the doctrines of God, Man, Sin, Salvation, Christian Discipleship and the Second Coming.
Professor Macleod is the master of his subject. He is consistently lucid, succint and pastoral. Like all truly learned man, he admits uncertainty, but maintains tolerance of opposing views, where the Bible is silent.
This book is unadulterated reformed theology at its Scottish best. It makes none of the compromises that modern American presbyterianism tends to make vis a vis the Westminster Confession of Faith.
In every sense, a superb book and highly recommended. Having read it through twice, I envy those who must be studying under Macleod.

A good popular Systematic Theology

This book began as two series of lectures that Professor Macleod, a Free Church of Scotland theologian, delivered. Professor Macleod has an impressive gift for making the complex simple. In twenty-six chapters he deals admirably with most of the main and sub points of dogmatics from scripture and the Trinity to hell and heaven. The confessionally Reformed reader will appreciate the chapters and benefit greatly.
One might want to put some question marks in the margins of the chapter on creation where he is not hostile to the thought of the universe being thousands of millions of years old. He suggests we might do well to interpret the six days as creation eras rather than days as we know them. He does, however, reject Darwinism.
One may not agree with every thought or turn of phrase, but there is much to be learned and gained from reading this popular exposition of the points of theology. One can only admire Macleod's facility as a teacher.

Definitely one for your bookshelf (or Kindle)

I thought it was a very complete presentation of basic Christian doctrines. I also thought the author did a good job with many of his "illustrations" that I felt helped explain many concepts in an understandable way. He also seemed careful at times to note what HIS personal beliefs on several things were so you wouldn't assume his coverage of them intended to be "authoritative"! I was also pleased to see I could download a "KINDLE version" to my I-Pad that kept me from having to always carry the book WITH me and will allow me to easily refer back to things from time to time!

Forensic science is no different from any other scientific discipline; its growth and vitality are inextricably linked to the continuous accumulation of knowledge through discovery and experience. Science builds on past accomplishments; its rate of progress is measured by the caliber of published data and results. The first edition of Forensic Science Handbook was published in 1982. This book eventually grew into the current three-volume series. The three Handbooks have proven to be widely circulated professional reference books, as well as standard textbooks for graduate courses in forensic science. For the foreseeable future, the Handbooks will remain a three-volume collection. For the most part, the subjects to be found in this second edition of Volume I remain the same as in the first edition, but with an updated content. However, there are some notable additions to this revision. The impact of DNA technology has fundamentally changed the way forensic analysts characterize biological stains. Volume One deals with the following topics; Legal Aspects of Forensic Science, Forensic Applications of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography and Capillary Electrophoresis, Forensic Applications of Mass Spectrometry, Forensic Glass Comparisons, Foundations of Forensic Microscopy, Visible Microscopical Spectrophotometry in the Forensic Sciences, The Forensic Identification and Association of Human Hair, Forensic Paint Examination, Arson and Explosive Investigation, Modern Forensic Biology, Forensic Examination of Soil, The Determination of Alcohol in Blood and Breath, and Questioned Document Examination.

Dr. Saferstein has done a wonderful job of getting well respected scientists to write each section. These handbooks should be required by any forensic science program.

Excellent teaching text

Have used this text (2nd and now 3rd editions)to teach business ethics classes at the graduate and undergraduate levels for several years. It is well written and popular with students. Case studies represent the spectrum of ethics issues found in business today. The foundational ethics theory is clearly articulated, appropriate and sufficient.

Pure hell to read from front to back - bring coffee!

This was a required text for my business ethics course and has to be the worst textbook that I've ever had the unfortunate task of reading. In five weeks, I had to read this book from cover to cover and it was an absolute bore. Small type, wordy, and inferior to even my business law and accounting textbooks.

While the subject matter is important, this book could stand a serious facelift.

If I could buy tickets to just one concert . . . WOW

CF is an all lesbian thrash metal band, known as much for their erotic stage show as they are for the extreme sexual innuendo of their songs. Washington College is sexually progressive school in Seattle, where the girls of the self-proclaimed futa club openly worship their dorm's Queen. It is those very same girls who convinced the college to invite the band, and they intend to make the concert one to remember.

Reed James does a glorious job of capturing the over-the-top antics of a highly sexualized heavy metal concert, right from the band's antics to the crowd's reaction. He turns what is often portrayed as a very straight, very masculine sort of atmosphere into something wholly feminine and completely sapphic. It is an atmosphere filled with breathless passion, and it is clear the band feeds off that sexual energy. I loved the way the story played with the futa mystery, showing just enough for the reader to understand what was going on, but keeping the band in the dark. Once the futa secret is out (courtesy of a succulent surprise snowball), and the action moves backstage, the story really starts racing to a climax.

There is so much to love here, so much detail to enjoy, you just know you are going to come out of it desperate for more. Really, all that is missing is a soundtrack.
