A must-read for the Lupus community

I have read just about every Lupus book out there--from memoir to treatise, from books aimed at neophytes to those targeted at the experienced patient. At this point I could probably write one of my own. But I keep reading rather compulsively, hoping to learn something new that will prove helpful. Usually this task proves rather Sisyphean.

But I struck gold when I read this book, far and away the most lucid treatment of the disease I have ever read. Anyone who has Lupus should read it, highlighting it as I did on my Kindle. Anyone who cares for, lives with, or loves someone with Lupus should read it. And (unlike other Lupus books) anyone who treats Lupus patients--as a physician or nurse--should also read it. It is jam-packed with tons and tons of very helpful advice and medical information.

However, if you do not have any biology background (as I do) you may find certain portions of the book a bit hard to understand. Just skip them. They are not important anyway. The advice sections, which are extensive beyond belief, do not require any knowledge of science and are very clearly written. I do like that Dr. Thomas has not watered down his book as other physicians do, and that he assumes that Lupus patients can choose to read those sections or not.

I hope he realizes that by writing this volume, he will empower the Lupus community (which is huge). Armed with an extraordinary amount of his medical advice--some of it granular and some, not--patients can go to their physicians to ask for critical lab tests and game changing medications. Many Lupus patients are not fortunate enough to have access to quality medical care, for one reason or another. This book may further propel them to be their own medical advocates, and substantially improve their health. It is a must-read.

AWESOME, AWESOME BOOK

AWESOME, AWESOME BOOK!!! My husband and I each have our own bookmarks init as he reads anything that I put in front of him that has to do with my illnesses, medicines and treatments...I am straddling @ 35 meds/day and 10 auto-immune disorders. I also just ordered this book today for my Parents. EVERYONE with Lupus or any of the other many associated auto immune diseases / disorders should have to read and use as a reference. I brought into my Rheumatologist's when I went in for my Rituxan treatment. They LOVED it and were going to order 1 or 2 to have onsite for patients to use / read while they where there getting any of their numerous treatments. Also, this book is VERY inexpensive for being a 900 page book...unbelievable! I pre-ordered mine in February 2014 and finally received in June 2014...WELL WORTH THE WAIT!!!!!

AMAZING amount of INFO about LUPUS

If you or someone you love has lupus, this is a great book to have on hand to read and study the disease as well as to have around to use as a reference tool any time you get new symptoms and want to look something up. I've been able to help answer lupus questions or concerns a couple of times already and I've only had it a couple of weeks. Here is a photo of one serious topic so you can see his style of writing. He gives an enormous amount of information written in an easy to understand style, yet still in great detail. This book could be used by your doctors as a reference book.

I can't say enough about these Sacketts and Louis L'Amour. I've enjoyed every word. Every story. Every shootout. And even the beauty of the country. L. L'Amour is not only very talented, but very imaginative. Sometime I'm even nervous just reading. You are going to so enjoy reading about the Sacketts and the country they helped discover and tamed. Enjoy! But except to be late to work whenever you read the night before. You just can't put the book down.

The Ready-Aim-Aim-Aim-Aim Syndrome

I embrace "The 3 Powerful S's" because to ignore the synergistic impact of Strengths, Spiritual Gifts and Social Styles is to ignore the amazing creativity and uniqueness of the people we live with, work with, worship with, and yes, cringe with.

So when a new quick-reading tool on social styles appears, I'm all over it. Written in the popular novelette/story format, this tool (just 143 pages) can be read in about 90 minutes.

Forget the 16 grids and confusing letter combinations of Myers-Briggs (ENTJ, INTJ, etc.). Skip the four animals system ("I can't remember--am I a collie, a muskrat or a hippo?") Don't waste time on the personality color systems, unless everyone in your circle is a color zealot (and they're not).

If you want to effectively relate to people, literally in an instant, then order "7 Seconds to Success." It's a fast read and co-authors Bob Phillips and Gary Coffey have a new, easy-to-remember slant:
* Analyticals are Thinkers
* Amiables are Touchers
* Drivers are Tellers
* Expressives are Talkers

The Four T's are descriptive and memorable and the story builds the case for understanding these styles--and why it's so important that you do. (Heads up all spouses, leaders, pastors, account reps, fundraisers, teachers, trainers, volunteer coordinators, CEOs, managers--and those who must "manage" their managers.)

The authors remind us that there are three key factors in effective communication:
* Content (7%)
* Tone of Voice (38%)
* Nonverbal Behavior (55%)

"It's easy to get into sloppy habits when it comes to dealing with customers, clients and prospects. We need to become more alert in reading the people we meet. Lord Chesterfield said, `Look in the face of the person to whom you are speaking if you wish to know his real sentiments, for he can command his words more easily than his countenance."

And this zinger: "When it comes to our own behavior, we judge ourselves by our motivations. When it comes to other people's behavior, we judge them by their actions and words."

You can recognize styles--in an instant--by observing pace and priority. Two pairs have the same priority:
--Thinkers and Tellers focus on tasks.
--Touchers and Talkers focus on relationships.

Two pairs have the same pace:
--Thinkers and Touchers tend to be slower-paced.
--Tellers and Talkers tend to be faster-paced.

Where's the conflict? Yikes! Two pairs have nothing in common:
--Thinkers and Talkers: huge potential for conflict!
--Touchers and Tellers: neither pace nor priority in common.

Can you really read a person's style--and make them comfortable--in just seven seconds? Yes. I've been a student of social styles for more than 30 years--and the authors are correct. You can relate to people in an instant, and by doing so, you'll advance the relationship by leveraging (not manipulating) a person's style.

If you're in the already-convinced circle of social style evangelists, you'll still benefit with one more tool. I've counted at least a dozen more insights (and PowerPoint slides) I've gleaned from just one quick read:

ADVICE FOR THINKERS: "Be willing to make decisions. That's the most important quality of a good leader." Don't fall victim to what T. Boone Pickens calls, the "ready-aim-aim-aim-aim syndrome. You must be willing to fire."

WHO ARE THE TALKERS? Bob Hope, Jay Leno, Star Trek's Captain Kirk, Donald Duck, and the apostle Peter. "If a Talker's house was on fire, he would say, `Since the house is on fire, let's warm ourselves.' They're very charismatic, friendly and enthusiastic."

WHAT ANNOYS TELLERS? Boredom, details, excuses, indecisiveness, small talk, and taking orders. (The book has the master list of annoyances for all four styles.)

WHAT DO TOUCHERS VALUE? Approval, coaching, comfort, compassion, friendliness, kindness, loyalty and peacefulness. (Each style has a very distinct list of what they value.)

The authors say you can relate to the four social styles by remembering the 4 P's. "With Thinkers, be precise. With Tellers, be practical, With Touchers, be personal. With Talkers, be positive."

I've reviewed other social styles books previously, including How to Deal with Annoying People by prolific writer Bob Phillips (11 million books in print). If you're new to social styles, start with this latest one.

I read it on a plane ride from the east coast to the west. Easy to read and understand. Very helpful in interrupting peoples actions in determining there personality type. Bought one for my 18 son to try to help him understand people, teachers, friends. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone.

The book was very interesting, although I think it will take a lot of practice to get the concept right. I have the general rule down but with practice this will be very helpful. I truly appreciate the Bible being incorporated into the book, you could say that is what got my attention.

The people of the county in general, I suppose, are as sober, and orderly, and good sort of people as in any part of New England; and I believe they have been preserved the freest by far, of any part of the country, from error, and variety of sects and opinions.

Best one in quite a while

Karen Robards latest novel is the best one in quite a while. Her last two novels have been some of her worst, but this one had all of her trademarks in it. I really enjoyed it and am thankful she has finally gotten her act back togather. When you pay for a hardback you expect to get your money's worth.

Kate White is an ADA in Philadelphia, she is a new lawyer. She has fought and worked her way from poverty to where she is now. She has a 9 year old son and as she starts work in the DA's office her life finally looks rosy. Raised in the foster child program, she has been alone until she married at 18 and had Ben. Her husband left her when Ben was born and he was later killed.

Tom Braga is a homicide detective at the PPD, his brother works for the Sheriff's dept. as a deputy. He comes from a large family, he is the oldest. Divorced and alone he has decided to protect the tender parts of himself. But during a shootout in the courtroom he makes a connection to the woman held hostage.

On the first day of her new job she is in court, when everything goes to ****. The defendent somehow gets a gun and the killing begins, at the end she is held hostage by the defendent in a hall way where he has demanded a helicopter for her life. The unexpected happens when a former member of the gang she ran with when she was 15, turns up. He is one of the crimimals held in one of the holding rooms, he also is part of this escape. He quickly kills her tormentor and tells her she better help him out and get him out of jail or he will reveal her presence at a murder of an off duty cop, when they were young.

She is stunned not just to be saved, but by Mario, the thug, who killed the cop. That was the reason she left Baltimore and ran away at 15. Her life is totally messed up again by the same person and for the same reason. She must protect her son and herself, anyway she can.

Tom's brother is the deputy shot and left for dead in the room Mario was in. When he wakes up he tells Tom there were two men in the hall with her. She has admitted to killing her abductor. He and his partner feel something is not right. However, nothing can stop the desire for her that he feels. He knows there is something wrong but can he trust this woman who lies to him with every breath.

Dropping by her house late one afternoon to question her again, he saves her and her son from someone who seems to be confronting them. Once again he knows she is not telling him the truth. But he spends the night on her sofa anyway.

The story is fast-paced and doesn't get draggy, the plot is involved and the romance is hot. Everything you expect from a Karen Robards story. I really enjoyed it and encourage you to get it. Good Reading. I must admitt that I didn't read it immediately, because I wondered if it was any good. Glad I did.

Great suspense and romance

Kate has spent the last 16 years trying to forget the night that her friends held up a convenience store and killed the clerk. Now a single mom and an ADA in Philadelphia, she is trying her first big case and in a bungled and deadly escape attempt, becomes a hostage in the court room. When her assailant is shot, she is face to face with Mario the friend who pulled the trigger all those years ago, and he insists that she help keep him out of jail, or he'll implicate her. She immediately becomes a media darling for taking out her attacker, but Tom Braga, the detective in charge, knows she's hiding something; and worse, he's falling for her and her son. When a series of break-ins and suspicious characters find their way to Kate's door, Tom appoints himself protector of both.

Robards keeps the suspense and action going from the first page to the last. Just when the reader thinks they know what will happen next, another surprise is tossed in. The chemistry between Kate and Tom is incredible, bringing a sense of authenticity into the story.

GRIPPING FROM PAGE 1

This book will grab you from page 1 and hold your interest thru the last paragraph. The horrible mess that Kate White ADA in Philadelphia finds herself involved in is incomprehensible, however you can actually imagine it from the headlines in any newspaper in the country. She has brought herself up with her "bootstraps" and made a real life for herself and her son Ben. Having that all ruined by "who knows" is unbelievable. However, I'm sure this plot (or various sub-plots of this book) happen on a more regular basis in the U. S. than we want to think.

I found this book very good. It held my attention, and I never put the book down from Page 1 thru the end...and even then I was disappointed there wasn't more.

If you like a good romantic suspense novel, you simply cannot go wrong with this one.
