Essential College Physics, by Andrew Rex, Richard Wolfson

Brief Description:

The goal of Essential College Physics is to provide a book focused on essential principles—a shorter, more focused book that better addresses the learning needs of today’s readers while more effectively guiding them through the mastery of physics. Brevity does not need to come at the expense of reader learning.

This book is designed from the ground up to be concise and focused, resulting in a book that is less intimidating and easier to use, with well-coordinated explanations, art, worked examples, and end-of-chapter problems. It incorporates an overarching connected approach: connecting ideas within and across chapters; connecting physics with the real world; connecting words and math; and connecting with how today’s readers learn and how they use their book. In addition to providing a strong foundation that teaches physics principles, the text also focuses on building readers’ problem-solving skills. The friendly, integrated approach, combined with the low price, makes Essential College Physics  an invaluable book choice.

Key Topics: Measurements in Physics, Motion in One Dimension, Motion in Two Dimensions, Force and Newton’s Laws of Motion, Work and Energy, Momentum and Collisions, Oscillations, Rotational Motion, Gravitation, Solids and Fluids, Waves and Sound, Temperature, Thermal Expansion, and Ideal Gases, Heat, The Laws of Thermodynamics, Electric Charges, Forces, and Fields,  Electric Energy, Potential, and Capacitors, Electric Current, Resistance, and Circuits, Magnetic Fields and Forces, Electromagnetic Induction and AC Circuits, Electromagnetic Waves and Special Relativity, Geometrical Optics, Wave Optics, Early Modern Physics, Atomic Physics, Nuclear Physics, Elementary Particles

About the Author

Andrew Rex has been professor of physics at the University of Puget Sound since 1982. He frequently teaches the College Physics course, so he has a deep sense of student and instructor challenges.  He is the author of several textbooks, including Modern Physics for Scientists and Engineers and Integrated Physics and Calculus. In addition to textbook writing, he studies foundations of the second law of thermodynamics, which has led to the publication of several papers and the widely acclaimed book Maxwell’s Demon: Entropy, Information, Computing.

Richard Wolfson has been professor of physics at Middlebury College for more than 25 years. In addition to his textbooks, Essential University Physics, Physics for Scientists and Engineers, and Energy, Environment, and Climate, he has written two science books for general audiences: Nuclear Choices: A Citizen’s Guide to Nuclear Technology, and Simply Einstein: Relativity Demystified. His video courses for the Teaching Company include Physics in Your Life and Einstein’s Relativity and the Quantum Revolution: Modern Physics for Non-Scientists.

Finally a textbook that fits the number of chapters you can actually cover in a semester
By Lene M. Jaqua
I love this textbook.

Essential College Physics has 26 chapters, which means I can run my students through 13 chapters per semester. With our standard college semester of 15 weeks + a finals' week, that leaves me a week or two for review as well as a couple of in class exams instead of trying to rush through 32 or more chapters in a semester and feeling like we never had time to breathe, OR cutting out the last chapters on nuclear and particle physics, which so often happens.

This text runs through the material in a straight forward and conceptual way that is well-suited for my premed students. The goals are well set at the beginning of the chapter, the pertinent equations are well marked in the text and in the summary at the end of the chapter. The problems at the end of the chapter are well suited to the level I need to have my students understand at... namely aiming for student MCAT proficiency as well as a strong student conceptual understanding of the basic principles of physics.

Each chapter runs around 20 pages or so, a reasonable amount for students to read per week on their own.

What I particularly like about this thext is that it is simple and not distracting with ancillary material for the students to plow through, which detracts rather than adds to the already demanding core materials, which the class must cover. So many College Physics texts have (well-meaning) exciting bunny trails and boxes and links to internet videos, etc at the margins of the text, and I find my students do not finish reading the actual core of the chapter. Also, there is so much material in those other texts that my students get confused and forget what the chapter is really about. This book is a simple read straight-through.

To the gentleman student who posted a review prior to mine, let me just insert that without an instructor who can adequately explain and conceptually make physics alive to students, physics is a difficult subject to do well in, REGARDLESS of the textbook. Physics should be taught by a qualified instructpor and supported by an excellent textbook like Rex and Wolfson's. It is the rare student, who succeeds at College level physics with a textbook alone.
