Fun, witty and light

This was a cute, funny read. It is my first venture into Rachel Hollis' writing and there are lots of things I enjoyed about it. This is book three in the series but considering I haven't read the others, this stands alone well. I can gather from Smart Girl who the other books were about but I didn't feel left behind by missing information.

Miko, the lead female character is a lovely mixture of quirky, warm, kind and a little off the wall. She's a talented designer for event planning and busy furthering her business. She's had a full-on desperate crush on Liam for about a year, this crush is something any woman can identify with, but it felt a little teenage in some aspects. Liam is described so that I did feel the pull of his attractiveness and understood Miko being besotted, but actually the more I got to know him, the less I liked him. As the story progressed, there were elements of Liam that totally frustrated me, neither could I respect Miko for her persistent tolerance of some of these issues.

The writing was fun, witty and stronger in the first 60% than later on. The book and writing is perfect for when you are in the mood for a light, easy read. I enjoyed this read and I'll definitely be looking out for more from Rachel Hollis.

Least favorite of the series, but still ok

This is a series of diminishing returns - I liked each book a little less than the one before. I felt that this is the weakest book of the three. It was quite sad, and I was disheartened to see Miko, the funny, quirky, upbeat one of the trio become a desperate sad version of herself. Her love affair with Liam (although really, it's just a series of booty calls) is so one-sided that the finale falls a little flat because we never see what's inside Liam. We only see him being a shallow, selfish charmer until the end when he does a full 180. Another issue is that while the first two books focus equally on the girls' career/love life, this book is almost exclusively about Miko's pursuit of Liam. Ironically, despite being mostly a romance, it was the least romantic to me. It's pretty telling that the most romantic moments in this book are provided by Landon & Brody. I wish that Rachel had chosen to keep the entire series from Landon's perspective because honestly she is the star of the series. Despite the issues I had with this particular novel, I still love these girls and was kind of melancholy to come to the end. Rachel Hollis is a wonderful writer, and I will definitely read anything else she comes up with.

Rachel managed to take a book and put ALL book lovers things into it. I mean who doesn't want to try to catch a man using things fictional women did to unknowingly catch the attention of their fictional man? Heck, I try them on my husband daily haha. But seriously, I had my doubts about Liam from the get go. Yes he's handsome and all things fictional men should be, but he was also very self-centered. Miko was so blinded by her desire to be with him that she missed it all. I loved Miko though, her and I relate on so many levels. Lists, books, lists book. I just can't design a thing to save my life, but hey... Lists and books! In the end Liam comes out to be the perfect man and all becomes well in the world again! Keep writing Rachel

another good book on response surfaces

George Box and Norman Draper have written an outstanding text on model building and response surface methods. This is an excellent companion to Box's text with Stu Hunter and William Hunter on experimental designs "Statistics for Experimenters". Another excellent, more recent and detailed account of response surface methods can be found in the book by Montgomery and Myers.

The end of the world is not a place but a time not too far in the future, a premise that is not as farfetched today as it would have seemed a decade ago. Grade 7-10-- The 21st Century begins with the signing of a worldwide nuclear disarmament treaty thought to be earth's salvation; unfortunately disaster and decimation arise from a combination of nuclear accidents, toxic oil spills, and experimentation with dangerous herbicides, which cause everyone to die. In the year 2025 Diana and her parents, living on a farm beside beautiful, self-preserving Redfern Lake, have had no contact with any other settlements in a year and realize that they are probably the last of all humans. One day Diana stumbles across Hector, a boy who has been part of a secret society living underground since 1968, who just happens to have followed his dog out of the underground maze of tunnels. The lives of Diana, Hector, and Redfern Lake follow an intertwining course from that initial meeting. The Eden-like setting of Redfern Lake, an oasis in a devastated world, offers a plausible rationale for Diana's family to still be alive. Reading of their survival techniques is akin to reading a modern version of Swiss Family Robinson ; although rescue is not possible, the discovery of this secret society, a handpicked assortment of scientists, artists, musicians, cooks, etc., grants Diana's family hope for companionship in their isolated world. Couldn't put it down

This is an excellent book. Set in the year 2025, it follows two main characters, Hector and Diana, and what they experience as two teenagers in a world that is so no longer "normal". The story is told from both perspectives - Hector's story and Diana's story. It is about strangers who learn to trust each other in a world where a disaster has wiped out all but a few of the world's population. Keeping in mind that this is a book written for young adults, it is well written and easy to follow - complex enough to be interesting to adults and simple enough to keep the attention of a young reader. My only complaint is that it left me wanting more - it really needs a sequel. My husband and 11 year old daughter give it 4 stars as well and also believe there should have been a sequel.

wonderful apocalyptic tale

I'm a fourty+ year old female who enjoys reading young adult books to review for school bookclubs. I highly recommend this story for young readers probably starting at fifth grade/over ten years old.

The style of the book is told through the alternating eyes of the two young people, Hector and Diana, in the year 2025. They may be the youngest people left in the world. Hector having lived underground in a cave all his life and Diana living with just her family alone by a lake nearby, neither knowing the others have existed.

It is not the world we know today - read the book and you'll be reading a great story about how the world changed by the year 2025. You'll slowly learn what has happened and in the end you'll wish there was more to the story, or use your imagination to imagine what they're life and the world will be like as they grow older.

The review by V.Chang is inaccurate when he wrote "In the past, because of a worldwide plague, a group of people: musicians, engineers, plumbers, carpenters, scientists, etc. escape down to the underground for safety." He is refering to the people Hector has lived with and they "escaped" underground in the late sixties under the guise by their leader that a nuclear disaster was imminent. It is in much later years that unexplained things occur causing people to die in huge numbers.

Also there is the sentence "Diana is the headstrong girl living in a house near the underground community. Both of them meet and soon get to know each other "well."" I personally find the use of the word- well - with quotes around it to imply something very grown up in the way the two children have a relationship and that is not the case.

Hopefully this book will come back into print but until then it is worth looking for at the library! For a simular books I would recommend:

The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau for kids in fourth grade and older.

For teens I would recommend Z for Zachariah by Robert C. O'Brien, out of print but well worth finding.

A wonderful story full of suspense!

If you love suspense, you'll certainly love this book! MacDonald does a wonderful job of portraying the future. It's the kind of story you can read again and again.
