About the Author
Peter J. Brown teaches at Emory University. He is a professor in the Department of Anthropology, Emory College of Arts and Sciences and also a professor in the Hubert Department of Global Health, Rollins School of Public Health. He serves as the Director of Emory�s Center for Health, Culture and Society. He has co-edited : The Anthropology of Infectious Diseases; Emerging Illnesses and Society: Negotiating the Public Health Agenda; Applying Anthropology (9th edition); and Applying Cultural Anthropology (8th edition). His research primarily deals with sociocultural aspects of malaria and its control, and he serves on a malaria-related Scientific Advisory Committee for the World Health Organization. He has an additional research interest on cultural issues in obesity and its related chronic diseases. Recipient of several teaching awards, he is a director of a new program "Global Health, Culture and Society" at Emory College.

Engaging Reading

This is a phenomenal collection of essays, ranging from ancient agricultural techniques to the interpretation of Shakespeare in remote Africa. It provides basic, easy to read, and entirely absorbing examples of how the field of anthropology (as well as linguistics, sociology, archeology, paleontology, and more) is at work around the globe. Each reading is brief enough to engage even the most reluctant reader and no background experience is necessary to understand and enjoy them - although advanced students will not be disappointed.

Some of the articles are older than others but overall this book is filled with interesting case studies. The book is divided into different categories of Anthropology including medical, biological, linguistic, educational, business and gender studies.

The second edition of Globalization & Media is an outstanding, readable, and interesting text for international communications courses. Last spring I looked for a new text for my university Global Media Systems course. So many texts in the field are hundreds of pages, uninteresting, and unorganized. Lule's text was a big hit---for the professor and the students. Within the manageable 191 pages, Lule focuses on the importance of media's role in political globalization, cultural globalization, and economic globalization. Have media and globalization produced the "Global Village" envisioned by Marshal McLuhan or the "Global Village of Babel," as predicted by Lewis Mumford? The question makes for interesting class discussions.

Great women's fiction

With such a short summary, I wasn't really sure what to expect from Rejection. I read it on the heels of The Enchanted Truth by Kym Petrie, which was a neat happenstance. The two books felt related to me: The Enchanted Truth's message was sort of the moral of Rejection. And reading Rejection was like seeing The Enchanted Truth played out in modern adult life.

I really felt for Maggie. So many bad things come her way, and she does have some woe-is-me moments, but for the most part she was great at not feeling sorry for herself. I loved reading about her attempts to 'find herself,' and how she eventually comes to the realization that she is enough, just as she is and she deserves more than what the man in her life can offer her.

The minor characters, mainly in Maggie's office setting, are what really made this book for me. They were hilarious and very well-developed! Maggie's job, as well, was interesting and I liked seeing her shine at work when she wasn't necessarily shining in her personal life. I did like Maggie's best friend Abby as well. (But why did Maggie sometimes call her Abby and then other times call her Abigail?) Abby added a lot to the story and seeing she and Maggie's interactions provided insight to Maggie's character.

Overall, I really enjoyed Rejection. It is a good example of what I like best about women's fiction: a strong heroine, great emotional writing and a good, realistic ending. I would recommend Rejection to fans of contemporary fiction and fans of women's fiction.

Something For Everybody

I don't typically read books in this vein but it came highly recommended by a friend as I'm a bit of a random fact junkie (this book is full of them - Maggie's job depends on it). As a single twenty-something with some brutal dating stories of my own, I was told I'd appreciate the humour as well. I'm happy to say this book did not disappoint in either regard as I learned plenty of weird trivia for parties and laughed out loud over the quirky but realized characters and happenings that surround our heroine. Things never get out of hand though, Bridges just understands the weird in daily life as well as the norm and you'll no doubt recognize traces of your own friends and colleagues in the colourful cast of characters. The author does a great job of balancing lighter moments with dramatic ones, there's a fun flow to the book and it never feels jarring.

If you've ever had a bad date bordering on ridiculous or spent time pondering your place in this crazy world it's impossible not to relate with and root for Maggie and want to see how it all plays out by the end. I recommend it to anybody who's had their share of dating scars or struggled to find meaning in daily life... and who hasn't lost their sense of humour about it! More Maggie please!

Well-written chick-lit

Maggie has just broken up with her boyfriend Connor - or in fact, he broke up with her. Her job as a fact-checker for a documentary-making company is going well, but she has some difficult co-workers to deal with.

When her love life doesn't improve and two of her friends are getting married, she feels like a failure. But slowly she picks herself up and learns to deal with life as it comes to her.

The book is very well written and the story is set out really well. However, there were a few spelling errors (which I could forgive the writer given the high standard of writing) and sometimes the chapters ended a bit abruptly.

The story was fun and realistic (without becoming boring). It is chick-lit in some sense - it's about a twenty-something woman looking for a relationship, but it's not the standard story of will they/won't they (and of course they will, in the end). Rather, the book is the story of a woman finding her way in life where work, friends and relationships are all an important part.

The story is not hugely exciting but interesting enough to keep reading. I got attached to Maggie and hoped at every situation that things would work out for her. I didn't get impatient with her as with (some) other chick-lit where the main character is too dumb to be believable. Instead, Maggie was a realistic person who did of course make the odd mistake or misjudged a situation as we all do from time to time.

This book is a lot better than the average chick-lit and I enjoyed reading it. I think it will appeal especially to readers in their twenties and thirties.

About the author

Indira Parthasarathy is the nom de plume of Professor R Parthasarathy, a well known, contemporary Indian author writing in Tamil. He has received several awards for his writing, including some of the highest honours in the fields of Indian literature and performing arts. The prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi and Sahitya Akademi awards and Saraswati Samman are among these. He has published several novels, anthologies of short stories, plays and essays. As an academician, he had a distinguished career in the Delhi, Warsaw (Poland) and Pondicherry Universities. As a visiting scholar at various Canadian Universities, he gave lectures on Indian philosophy and culture during the winter semester in 1985. A founder-director of the School of Performing Arts, Pondicherry University, he served there as Director of Culture for four years (1988-1992).

It's okay, however...

This book is pretty much a summary of KM Munshi's seven volume Krishnavatara. If you have that, you are wasting your time reading this. It is really unfortunate but this book might actually have been okay if it wasn't such a copy.

Disorganized with some disappointing absences, but still a lot of fun.

On the plus side, this book covers many, many great Marvel characters. The layouts for the individual entries are great, with quality illustrations, pretty concise synopses of character histories, and in general a decent explanation of each character's powers and abilities. The two-page spreads of important storylines are especially well done.

The layout of the book is a mess, however. Entries are broken down into six broad categories of character abilities (one section is for Avengers and villains with powers, one is for the technologically enhanced, one for magical characters, etc.) That's an unusual enough choice, but even within those categories, entries are thrown in a very haphazard order. For something billing itself an "encyclopedia" there's no easy way to reference an entry for a particular character without flipping back to the index every single time (and the index is so full even that is not a quick reference.)

My biggest complaint is the missing characters. There has been internet gossip that the comics publishing wing of Marvel have been deliberately downplaying the roles of the characters from the X-Men and the Fantastic Four because of Marvel films lack of the cinematic rights to these characters. I understand that these characters are all property of a huge corporation that can manage their brand however they see fit. Regardless, it is very disappointing to have an "Avengers Encyclopedia" that has entries for obscure characters such as Silverclaw and Grandmaster, or a full eight pages dedicated to Hank Pym, and no entry whatsoever for prominent Avengers like Beast, Wolverine, Storm, Rogue, or The Thing. (These characters are not completely ignored - they appear in illustrations and are mentioned as part of other character bios or storylines; they are simply not given their own entries, which is still ridiculous.)

All told, it is a nice volume with a good balance of information about a wide variety of characters. Perhaps future volumes will be better organized and more comprehensive.

It came on time and it is such an awesome book for someone who loves Marvel's. I have it to my 26yr nephew for Christmas and he just loved it!! Will purchase from this company again!!
