About the Author
Robert Girling is a professor in the School of Business at Sonoma State University where he teaches in the graduate program. He received his Ph. D. from Stanford University and has taught and consulted in 20 countries. His previous professional experience includes teaching at the Federal University of Bahia, the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil, the University of the West Indies, and American University in Washington D.C. He has consulted with the World Bank, USAID, the United Nations, and the International Center for Research on Women. He is a social entrepreneur who co-founded LIDERE, a school improvement program in Brazil which worked with 80 schools in Northeastern Brazil and a co-founder of the Sustainable Enterprise Conference series. Professor Girling is the author of many articles and books including Multinational Institutions and the Third World (1985); Education: Management and Participation (1990); The Participatory School 10th edition (2011)

Being Good

The Good Company offers up an enlightening and encouraging thesis: Profitability and corporate responsibility are not mutually exclusive. Non-profits do not have the corner market on going out into the world to do good and for-profit businesses do not have to slash and burn in the pursuit of the almighty dollar. With each case study about companies who are philanthropic in nature, or especially benevolent to their employees, etc. I couldn't help but wonder, "But isn't all of this just a marketing ploy? Are we only hearing from the happy employees? What are they not telling us?" Of course when I got to the last chapter I saw that these doubts were addressed by the acknowledgement that we do need some kind of policing of claims from companies since consumers have been burned before. Maybe if that were addressed earlier in the book that nagging distrust could have been alleviated? Consumers are sick to death of seeing pictures of a CEO presenting a check to rag wearing orphans with a big smile on his face only to hear that he is secretly doing something awful behind the scenes. Is it truly philanthropy if you get something in return or is it just bartering for goodwill and PR? I respect the acknowledgement by the owner of Give Something Back who said people aren't making good companies just out of the goodness of their hearts but because customers are now demanding it. This book with its numerous case studies of successful and responsible companies and concepts such as the quadruple bottom line, that being responsible doesn't have to come at the cost of profits, illustrates that ethics and sustainability shouldn't be afterthoughts or marketing tools but just part of doing business. I will most definitely bring this thesis forward into my professional life as gives me proof that I am not doomed to walk into the world leaving big, heavy, ugly footprints in the Earth when I conduct business but instead can tread lightly.

I am an ESL teacher who teaches business to foreign students. I have been looking for resources on Global Businesses that make a difference. The Good Company does exactly that.--It helps students see that there are a growing number of companies like Give Something Back and Kiva that are not all like Exxon Mobile or Goldman Sachs. These companies are working to make the world a better place against all odds.

Once a company goes public, how does it remain competitive and "responsible" to its shareholders, while at the same time practice social responsibility? Under the capitalist system, many would say this is impossible. Professor Girling's book is filled with case studies showing how capital can be used for the better good of society, and is required reading for young entrepreneurs with a vision.

Students are eager to learn the language as it is spoken now, yet what they get to read is Somerset Maugham or John Cheever (who are great writers of course, and highly discussable, but you can't get an idea of how people speak NOW from them).Once again I'd like to say that your stories seem genius to me. Wish they were made into a film. It's not only about the plot and the style, not even about the idea. It's like the characters stand up off the page and play it all in front of your eyes. I've been living with them for a while - while translating - and they don't quite let me go even after the translation is over. About the Author
An author who has had many stories published in the women's weekly magazines and literary journals, John was drawn to writing at an early age. At one time in his teenage years he was reading one book a day---the subject didn't matter, but it needed to grab his interest in the first couple of pages, or he would abandon it. And this is the rule he has since applied to all his writing, believing that if you haven't grabbed the reader straight away, you are not writing well enough.. After graduating with an Honors Degree in History he spent many years in academic publishing, at last leaving to pursue his long-held dream of becoming a writer. "Easily among the very best new writers we have seen", "fresh and original", "creates life-like characters---maybe too life-like" (whatever that means!), are some of the comments made by literary reviewers and consultants about his work. His favorite band is The Moody Blues.

A deliciously diverse collection of stories to both shock and make you smile...

This is the fourth and last volume of the whacky stories series. Like the previous ones, all the stories are well written, and mostly with a deliciously naughty twist in them.

One of the dangers of anthologies such as this is that there can be a tendency for the stories to become repetitive, but here we have a refreshing diversity. Just when you think you've got the stories figured out, the author throws in a couple that are as delightfully sentimental and smile inducing as you can imagine; the first story has quite an adult theme to it, treating the reader to a really sharp and almost shocking twist, whereas in another of the stories, the author leads the reader in a very definite direction, only to delight with a more gentle shock, and of the most touching confirmations of enduring love as I've read in a long time.

Yes, the stories are aimed at a female readership, but I think their appeal extends much further. I will certainly be reading some of the author's differently themed anthologies in the near future. All in all, a great series that I would heartily recommend, not only a female readership, but anyone who enjoys cleverly written stories of the 'twist in the tale genre'...

Short, but sweet collection

I've enjoyed all four books in the series and commend the author on his hard work and ability to entertain his audience. As said previously, my concerns are those of a writer/reader, so are a minor aspect of any review. Repetition of names, locations or situations within a series is something to watch out for, but that said, I enjoyed the stories once again.
Take care with the punctuation John and don't spoil all your hard work with those three dashes, or ellipsis with more than three dots - four if it's the end of a sentence.
I felt quite smug with this volume because I managed to solve two of the tales very early on, but I'm not going to spoil anybody's fun by saying which ones. My favourites in this book were 'Men Will Say Anything' and 'Over The Top'.
In summary and considering the series as a whole, there were some small glitches, but a worthy effort in short story writing with some skilful twists and turns in the tales.
I would recommend not one book, but the series, to anyone who enjoys a twist-in-the-tale story. Well done John.

RECOMMENDED READ

These short stories are a bit wacky, off the wall and most of them end with a twist which you least expect, they are different from the norm and occasionally have a macabre angle to each storyline.

There is no doubt J Smith knows how to write stories aimed at the female gender and how he definitely comprehends how bizarre we tend to relate tot he situation in each story.

There has to be a plus to a man specifically writing with a woman in mind and there is no doubt he has a talent for writing short stories ending with a punch line.

Unfortunately after reading through the volumes it starts to become rather repetitive and you wish the write would write longer versions.

Should the author expand his talents and write a complete book using one of the stories contained throughout the volume I would certainly review it.

About the Author
Thomas J. Asborne, a specialist in 20th century American foreign relations, achieved his Ph.D. at Claremont Graduate University in 1979. This native Californian has won fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and from the Univeristy of California Institute on Global Conflict and Coopertion.

A member of the International History Honor Society, Asborne spent a year as visiting faculty on the Manoa campus of the University of Hawaii. Today he coordinates the honors program and teaches at Santa Ana College where in 1988 he was the recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Awarad and, in 1997, merited the President of the Board of Trustees Award.

He was selected by Kettering Foundation to participate in Dartmouth's Conference on Soviet-American Relations and on the National Board of Directors of the Beyond War Foundation. In 1991-92 Asborne completed conflict resolution studies at Harvard Law School.

Tom and his wife, Ginger, a psychology professor, live in Laguna Beach and surf the Pacific with sons, Brooks and Todd.

But in other ways. Ashton-Kirk looks forward to the future of the mystery, in ways that seem bold for 1910. Unlike the staunchly middle-class Holmes, Ashton-Kirk (we never learn his first name) is a wealthy social aristocrat who solves crimes for the sheer pleasure. He appeared over a decade before two other upper crust sleuths he resembles: Lord Peter Wimsey (who Dorothy L. Sayers created in 1923) and Philo Vance (who S.S. Van Dine would first write about in 1926).

Like both of these sleuths, Ashton-Kirk has friendly contacts on the police force, who give him their full cooperation. Ashton-Kirk is thus the "genius amateur who works with the police" that would play such a major role in the Golden Age to come.

Book One: Ashton-Kirk, Investigator - Those who have found their way to Ashton-Kirk's door have been of many races and interests. Men of science have often been surprised to find him in touch with the latest discoveries, scholars searching among strange tongues and dialects, and others deep in tattered scrolls, ancient tablets and forgotten books have been his frequent visitors. But among them come many who seek his help in solving problems in crime.

Book Two: Ashton-Kirk, Criminologist - Who held the old-fashioned brass candlestick that struck down "the Bounder"--and set mystery a-throbbing in the quiet suburb of Stanwick? Bat Scanlon, athletic trainer and good sport, found a clue in the dark hotel office where the little Swiss sharpened his murderous knife. But it was Ashton-Kirk who discovered the pat a beautiful woman played in the drama.

Fun read

I enjoy reading mysteries and I enjoy historical settings This book gives you both. It is a true mystery, with clues that enable the reader to figure out "who did it" if you pay close attention. There is no gore, which pleases me. The only negative for me is the reference to illustrations in the text that I could not see on my Kindle.
