About the Author
Steven C. Frautschi joined the California Institute of Technology faculty in 1962 and became professor emeritus in 2006. His publication list includes 80 research papers on the theory of high energy physics, and the book 'Regge Poles and S- Matrix Theory'. He has served as Master of Student Houses and has won three student teaching awards.

Richard P. Olenick is currently the chair of Department of Physics at University of Dallas. He was Associate Project Director of the PBS Series The Mechanical Universe and Beyond the Mechanical Universe, which accompanied this textbook and its successors. He has received numerous grants from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education for his work in physics education. His current project is C3P, which developed an inquiry-based curriculum for high school physics. In 1995, Dr Olenick was named Texas Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation and in 1997, he was named a Minnie Piper Steven Professor. In 2003, he became the Nancy Cain Marcus and Jeffrey A. Marcus Chair in Science and in 2005 he received the King Award from the University of Dallas, which is the highest honor the University can bestow on a faculty member.

Tom M. Apostol joined the California Institute of Technology faculty in 1950 and is now Professor of Mathematics, Emeritus. He is internationally known for his textbooks on Calculus, Analysis, and Analytic Number Theory, which have been translated into 5 languages, and for creating Project MATHEMATICS!, a series of video programs that bring mathematics to life with computer animation, live action, music, and special effects. The videos have won first-place honors at a dozen international video festivals, and have been translated into Hebrew, Portuguese, French, and Spanish. His list of publications includes 98 research papers, 46 of them published since he retired in 1992. He has received several awards for his research and teaching. In 1978 he was a visiting professor at the University of Patras in Greece, and in 2000 was elected a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Athens, where he delivered his inaugural lecture in Greek.

Dr. David L. Goodstein is Vice Provost and Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at the California Institute of Technology, where he has been on the faculty for over 35 years. In 1995, he was named the Frank J. Gilloon Distinguished Teaching and Service Professor. In 1999, Dr Goodstein was awarded the Oersted Medal of the American Association of Physics Teachers, and in 2000, the John P. McGovern Medal of the Sigma Xi Society. He has served on and chaired numerous scientific and academic panels, including the National Advisory Committee to the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate of the National Science Foundation. He is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the California Council on Science and Technology. His books include States of Matter and Feynman's Lost Lecture, written with his wife, Dr. Judith Goodstein. In the 1980s, he was Director and host of The Mechanical Universe television program.

An clear presentation of mechanics

I saw the excellent Mechanical Universe Television series while I was in high school and I recently purchased this book. I've just finished reading this book and am simultaneously doing problems in Schaum 3000 Physics problems. This is a great reader to use as it puts the physics in the historical context and traces the reasoning these great scientists used in inducing their conclusions in the first place. The explanations are mostly very clear. Some of the historical interpretations are questionable but they do not detract from the overall value of the historical approach. This is how all physics should be taught.

A Marvelous and Timeless Intro to Physics (and Calculus)

This book may be older than my college-age daughter, but it's still one of the best introductions to elementary physics that you'll find anywhere. Marvelously readable, the authors do a wonderful job of interweaving historical context for the development of the ideas with lucid explanations of the modern understanding.

Be aware that calculus is sprinkled liberally throughout. Fortunately, the authors introduce and explain the calculus they use, and they do it in a way that is not only easy and painless; you actually begin to see why modern physics would not be possible without calculus.

With its highly readable explanations and historical perpective, this book might make a good back-up text for a college student taking Intro Physics. It's also suitable as the backbone of an advanced high school course where the instructor desires to incorporate calculus. In fact, there was a TV series that closely follows the text, minus the calculus, and is targeted at high school students. You can still find it on DVD and VHS (although not from Amazon) but you'll pay $450 to $500 for all 26 (maybe 28?) hours.

Finally, it's perfect if you (like me) went to school too many years ago and would just like to refresh your knowledge of the subject. I know a lot of amateur astronomers who fit in that category! As a bonus, you get a refresher course in calculus along the way.

Note that there is a second volume that dives into electromagnetism as well as quantum mechanics at the same introductory level. There is also an "advanced" version of this book that I have not looked at. Judging from the table of contents, however, it appears to be the same basic material slightly re-organized.

Highly recommended.

This is the most unhelpful textbook I have ever used. Yes, it included all the significant personality theorists and theories, so as far as content goes, it's fine. BUT the explanations were so long-winded and convoluted that I couldn't understand some of the theories at all. I went away thinking I was just an idiot when it came to theories of personality, only to start looking at other textbooks and realize that no, the theories were perfectly within my understanding... when they were adequately explained.

Harnessing the power of trust in negotiations

I’ve read many books on negotiation in general, and negotiation strategies in particular, but The Trust Factor runs at the head of the pack, so it deserves a review. The book has plenty of wisdom to impart on negotiation strategies, but adds a rare look at another crucial factor: trust, as the glue between negotiating parties.

The author, veteran negotiator Keld Jensen, focuses on this vital aspect of any negotiation, and provides tools for self-empowerment – the means to arm yourself for any future negotiation, large or small.

You might think that there’s some degree of trust is in every relationship – and you’d probably be right. But have you ever considered the degree of trust necessary before you would even begin any important negotiation?

One of the essences of Jensen’s book is this: the lower the level of trust between negotiating parties, the smaller the value they will come away with when negotiations are concluded.

Looking at the other side of this same idea, if you can successfully raise the trust factor, you can effectively increase the value both parties will take home from the negotiating table.

Keld’s book is not just a “soft,” theoretical, ivory-tower collection of philosophic musings. It is rich with real, experience-based tactics and practical examples – backed by contemporary thought on the psychology of how we think and act.

PreSchool-Grade 1-Bertie just loves everything that adults consider dirty. He picks up candy from the street and boogers from his nose. He hunts for slugs and worms and pees on the flowers along with his cat. All this is performed to constant admonishments from those around him, "No, Bertie! That's dirty, Bertie!" He learns the hard way to stop most of his bad habits with one exception, picking his nose. The text is uninspired and the illustrations too broadly cartoonish and unattractive. Those looking for a good read about bad behavior would be better served by David Shannon's eponymous tales (Scholastic).

Fantastic Illustrations!

I spotted this book on the shelf of a bookstore in Greenwich, England largely due to the illustrations rather than just the content. I bought it for my then two-year-old son while we were living in London. Of course I suspected what others have confirmed in their reviews, namely that it initially taught him about some dirty habits rather than moving him away from them. But that was short-term and with repeated reading he soon learned not to______, or ______, or eat _____ and ______.

Still, we both did find it hilarious and over a year later, he's still enjoying this one. And in the long run he doesn't "wee in the flower bed", or "pick boogies from his nose", and he never eats them, so I think one can still argue that the book works. As others have written, he does love repeating "No, Bertie that's dirty Bertie!".

This year on a return trip, I managed to find another book illustrated by David Roberts at the Tate Modern Museum Shop - Cinderella (an Art Deco rendition) and it's also a great story with a modern twist.

I hope more of his books will be sold here in the US.

tickles the funny bone in kids

My 6,4 and 2 year old all love this book. They think it is hilarious. They love to shout out "No Bertie, that's dirty Bertie" . I thought it may have been a little young for my 6 year old but I think the "oooh yuck factor" won him over. He liked it so much he couldn't wait to take it to school so his teacher could read it to the class. It makes everyone giggle and I recommend it highly , so do my kids!

Not my cup of tea

I purchased this book because it was a bargain book (only $5.99) and I thought it might have a lesson for my daughter about not eating or touching yucky things. For me, I think some of the references (picking "boogers" and "eating boogers") and illustrations (Bertie and the cat "peeing" in the flower bed) are inappropriate. The book basically gives kids new ideas. When I was finished reading the book to my daughter, she proceeded to stick her finger in her nose and say "Look mom!" I would have returned the book but my daughter ripped one of the pages shortly after we read it. I also thought about donating it to the library but would have to do so anonymously because I wouldn't want my name associated with it.

About the Author

SIMO MOHAMED DAFIR is a Managing Director at Volguard, a financial consulting firm specializing in Capital Markets, Wealth Management and Derivatives. He has over fourteen years of experience during which he has held senior positions in a number of major international banks in Hong Kong and Singapore. He was the Regional Head of Commodity Structuring at Standard Chartered Bank, Head of Commodity Exotics and Hybrids at Merrill Lynch Asia, and Trader of Credit Derivatives at Credit Suisse. He is also Professor of Global Financial Markets at Sorbonne Assas International Law School and an expert witness for financial markets litigations. Dafir started his career in Aerospace and Telecom at the European Space Agency and Alcatel. This is a good book for beginners looking to learn about the energy markets. The description of oil markets and geopolitics is quite detailed. It is also especially useful for risk managers and strategy professionals who are looking to design hedging strategies appropriate for their organizations. One of the few resources on commodity markets that touches on the practicalities of the hedging process, with case studies describing the use of simple tools.

It also goes into sufficient depth regarding commodity price models and associated risks, making it a handy resource for experienced fuel hedgers.

A great read.

On Becoming a Farmer!

If you are like me and enjoy growing your own produce but you have limited space, buy this book. Mini Farming lays out all the many different methods of producing food in small spaces as well as raising animals too. Author Marcus Scott gives us a thoroughgoing understanding of soil preparation, different styles of agriculture, and what animals are best raised in limited spaces. Well worth a read!

The sections on traditional equipment are quite good, lots of information, far more than other texts I've seen.
The section on sleep therapy devices is half-baked, of the little information that's there some is quite inappropriate, suggests the author of that chapter doesn't understand his/her topic.
