DI Vera Stanhope is not one to make friends easily, but she has more tolerance for her hippy neighbours than most. When one of them goes missing she feels duty-bound to find out what happened. It's an easy job to track the young woman down to a country retreat where aspiring authors gather to work through their novels. It gets complicated when a body is discovered and Vera's neighbour is found with a knife in her hand. Calling in the team, Vera knows that she should hand the case over to someone else but the investigation is too tempting. Then another body is found, and Vera suspects that someone is playing games with her.

I flew right through Ann Cleeves, The Glass Room. It's part of her DI Vera Stanhope series, and we've watched several seasons of Vera through Acorn.
A murder takes place at a writers workshop in a fairly deserted area of North England. How are all these people connected? Then another murder takes place, and the scene is obviously staged. Vera is her usual superficially ditsy self, but underneath her detectives brain is working overtime.
A well done whodunit that is somewhat complicated, but not impossible to figure out near the end. I think Cleeves hits the right note allowing the reader some room to figure out who the killer is, if they've paid attention to all the clues dropped. Very enjoyable fast read.
The personal relationships make this series special, much is alluded to and I'm sure breadcrumbs are dropped throughout the series.

Another wonderful Vera adventure
By Kai Roberts
I love all of Anne Cleeves' Vera Stanhope novels and this is another winner. I would give it 4 1/2 stars if I could. I haven't awarded it five stars only because it didn't possess the intense level of suspense for me that the other novels created (especially The Crow Trap). However, I realize this is a very personal judgment and others could well regard it as a full-fledged five-star stunner. I wouldn't argue with them. The writing is excellent; the characterizations are wonderful -- nuanced and very credible (as usual); Cleeve's ear for dialog is terrific and her ability to conjure up atmosphere is spot on. She also writes about environments that she has personally experienced, such as the bird watching community or, in this instance, writers' workshops, thus bringing these rather specialized worlds to life. I daresay the author has spent many an hour in the company of other ambitious writers in a variety of workshops and she hasn't wasted her time or her observational skills for one instant. Her descriptions of the personalities that people the workshop in The Glass Room are so insightful and cleanly etched that they allow the reader to feel present in the room -- as if one is almost a character in the novel, sitting just on the edge of the action and observing the other players. The plot involves a series of murders that occur at a secluded house, the venue of a prestigious writers' course. Vera's unconventional neighbor has disappeared and Vera traces her to the Writer's House only to stumble upon a fresh corpse and her neighbor with a knife in her hand -- a wallop of a start. But as in all of Cleeves' novels, appearances are not always what they seem. Is Joanna the murderer or another victim? The plot develops fascinating twists and turns from then on, though the subsequent pace lagged just a bit for me after so powerful a beginning. Still, the reader is kept guessing and remains very much engaged in the plot. It's a good choice for a fine read.
