A look inside Reagan's Foreign Policy
By M. A. Ramos
Alexander Haig was President Reagan's former Secretary of State. In this book he gives his views on international events in the Middle East, the Falklands, Poland, and Lebanon and spells out his differences with the Reagan strategists. He thus reveals his rivals' flaws as well as his own. This is an interesting personal first hand look inside the Foreign Policies and the Department of State of the Regan Administration. Well worth the read.

A great read about both the professional and personal aspects of conducting America's foreign policy
By bostonviking
Alexander M. Haig is one of America's great unsung heroes during difficult times. He battled in Korea, Vietnam and Washington--this is his story of the latter. President-elect Ronald Reagan brought Haig on board to lend gravitas to his foreign policy team. Reagan's decision was bold and courageous considering Haig's previous service in the administration of Richard Nixon. Haig brought much-needed and highly-valued foreign policy experience to the Reagan team but he failed to gel with Reagan's very loyal inner circle. It was somewhat a contest between traditional east coast vs modern west coast Republicanism though it had as much to do with personal peccadilloes and historical animosities among the players. That being said, this remains a fine personal memoir by the former Secretary of State of the concerns of the day highlighted by his unique perspective. "Caveat" describes Haig's general thinking about foreign policy while introducing the reader to the difficult mechanics involved in actually implementing policy. This is a good read.

An insider's view into the early Reagan administration
By Dr. Jones
Haig was one of the early members of the Reagan administration, but one who did not quite fit in. Haig was not a Reagan "man," rather he came from the Nixon/Ford wing of the GOP establishment. Consequently he was never really on the inside of the decision-making process, and this book illustrates what he thought the results of this. Haig also shares his views of Reagan and his policies. And, he seems to find both wanting. Is this sour grapes? Or is it something else? Well, this book shows that Haig was just working another paradigm entirely. Reagan and he were just not on the same page. Still a great read.
